Obituary of Harry E. Lunt
Harry E. Lunt, 84, of Mendham, beloved husband of Carmela Lunt, died at home on April 3, 2009. Visiting is April 7 at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd, Mendham 973-543-4720, 2 to 4:30 and 6:30 to 9 pm with services at 8 pm.
As Corporate Consulting Engineer for Materials Engineering at Burns & Roe he was involved in the Tokamak Fusion Reactor at Princeton University, the Light Water Reactor at Argonne National Lab, and other new reactor designs at Columbia University. He twice was witness at Congressional Committee hearings.
Mr Lunt was also Corporate Metallurgist for Worthington Corporation, Senior Research Engineer at Westinghouse Electric, Research Metallurgist at US Steel, and Research Assistant at the Atomic Energy Commission Ames Laboratory.
Mr. Lunt graduated in chemistry Magna Cum Laude from Syracuse University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned an MS in metallurgy from Iowa State University. He earned the Award of Merit and was named Fellow of the American Society for Testing and Materials. He was Fellow of the American Society for Metals. The Standards Engineering Society of ASTM awarded him the Robert J. Painter Award. He was Past Chair of the NJ ASM and Secretary of the Metro NY-NJ Chapter.
He served two years in the Army as a Cryptographic Technician during WWII leaving as a Technical Sergeant.
He is also survived by four children, Teresa, Diana, Linda, Steven; seven grandchildren, Alyson, Eric, Benjamin, Valerie, Emily, Molly, and Sophie. A fifth child, Alan, predeceased him.
