Obituary of Emily K Uptegrove
Emily Uptegrove, of Randolph, NJ, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024 at the age of 98. Born Emily Loomis Knight in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Emerson B. and Katherine H. Knight. Emily lived a life full of love, kindness, and dedication to her family and community.
Emily grew up in Ohio and Gloucester, MA; she met her husband Neil in New York City. They married on June 1, 1946 and raised their family in Mendham and Stillwater, New Jersey. In retirement, they lived in Las Cruces, NM, where Emily was an active member of the Science of Mind Center.
Emily was predeceased by her husband Neil and her sister Sylvia Barratt. Emily is survived by two daughters, Heidi Courtney of Estes Park, CO and Liese Uptegrove of Carmel, NY, four sons, Dirck Uptegrove of Morristown, NJ, Eric Uptegrove of Waianae, HI, Pieter Uptegrove of Newton, NJ, and Leif Uptegrove of Bolton, MA. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Emily was an active member of the Center for Spiritual Living, where she found solace and community. She was also an enthusiastic writer, having penned the children's book Peter Falls Up. Emily had a deep love for music, enjoyed singing, and cherished dancing, often expressing her joy through movement. Additionally, she was a true chocolate aficionado, delighting in discovering and savoring new chocolate varieties.
Emily will be remembered for her compassion and commitment to helping others. Emily made significant contributions throughout her life, supporting the recovering community and their families, as well as teaching English as a second language. Her kindness, warmth, and gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held on August 12, 2024 at Bailey Funeral Home, located at 8 Hilltop Rd, Mendham Borough, NJ 07945, to celebrate Emily's life and legacy. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30, with a memorial service to follow from 11:30 to 12.
Emily was a lifelong lover of animals, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of Emily’s favorite charities, Alley Cat Allies, in her name.
Emily's memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
