My mother Emily was a multifaceted artistic wonderful warm creative unique individual who had many gifts and talents and a personality that was sensitive, warm, uplifting, loving, caring and fun, all-in-one. She loved a good time and a good laugh and a good joke even if it was on her.
In addition, she had an innate sense of adventure and loved to explore people, places and things. And of course when she would visit me in NY and I visited her out west we went on many exploratory adventures together and had a blast.
We would have tons of fun playing guitar and singing together in harmony, and ultimately end up laughing hysterically because one of us would goof it up at one point or another.
Turning back the clock, there were the holidays, which she loved. I remember back in the day when we would celebrate with good old-fashioned fanfare. Christmas, Halloween, Easter, in the traditional fashion, with lots of decorations, baked goods and wonderful atmosphere… I look back at the Halloween costumes that Mom had made for us and they were a riot, we just loved it and had so much fun going door to door – I think the neighbors had almost as much fun as we did just looking at the dreadful vision of us on their doorstep. She also initiated a haunted house tour in our house where we lived in Stillwater complete with home-made props and spooky stuff, with the candy reward at the end for our shocked trick-or-treat visitors. Easter time we would dye the easter eggs and there would be an easter egg hunt after we all explored what the Easter Bunny left in our baskets overnight.
But her favorite holiday was Christmas. So in true classic tradition we all participated in the Christmas tree decoration, lots of cookie making and baking, and top it off with her famous CHOCOLATE FUDGE recipe. And of course, the hanging of stockings and the opening of Christmas presents on Christmas day - the highlight of her year.
Fast forward to their retirement years, when visiting each other between New York and New Mexico we discovered lots of beautiful artistic objects that I acquired to adorn my home, and to this day I can look around my house and see a multitude of things in each room that remind me of my time together with her on those glorious adventures. And now she has embarked on a new and bigger adventure, and we send our love along for the ride of this phase of her journey.

Many of Emilys family & friends remember her love of chocolate. Emily spent part of her childhood in New England where she developed her love of seafood, specificly lobster! Each time she came to NE we would take her to a different seafood restaurant, at her request. Most of the time she ordered lobster. Let me tell you she was not very good at cracking a shell, the fluid went everywhere. After many interesting dining experiences with Emily & lobster, I finally thought I had solved the lobster dilemma - we went to a clam shack in Warren RI, she could have her choice of any type of lobster - it was outdoors, safe, the lobsters on the menu all with no shell, I thought boy we are good! She ordered clams!!!

For we town kids in Stillwater friends of son Leif, Emily’s house was always an open island of warmth, graciousness, and laughter. We were always welcomed at her place. When I’m back home to pay my respects at the town cemetery to my loved ones who have crossed the bar, I drive by the former Uptegrove house and always smile at the joy of childhood memories made there in Emily’s home. Sincerest condolences to the whole family. Peace to all.

Heidi’s thoughts on Mom
CHOCOLATE.… When I think of Mom, chocolate comes to mind.
There those who love chocolate, chocoholics, and then there’s Mom, in a category all by herself.
Mom was synonymous with chocolate.
We always laughed and said she was solely responsible for keeping the chocolate industry in business.
The delight she took in something chocolate was something to behold.
She managed to pass that chocolate gene to all of us siblings.
Mom always said if there was no chocolate in heaven, she’s not going.
I’m hoping heaven has chocolate……I don’t want to think about the alternative, all the chocolate would be melted.
Mom was a multifaceted creative person with a joyful, playful spirit.
I remember going to New Mexico with my fiancée, Mike, so that Mom and Dad could meet him.
When we arrived, Mom wanted to go to the supermarket to get supplies.
Mike and I took her to Albertsons, as we entered the store, there was a display box full of
Swimming pool “noodles”. She grabbed one and gaily started bopping Mike with it.
The only thing to do was for Mike to grab one and bop back. I joined in the fray, and
While we were beating each other up, we all had a good laugh.
This was Mike’s first introduction to Mom.
Another fond memory is Mom’s love of literature. She was an avid reader and enjoyed
Reading books to us as youngsters. From Nursery rhymes to the classics, I loved it all.
“Winnie the Pooh”, “Alice in Wonderland”, The complete Frank Baum Oz series, the works of Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, to name a few.
Mom’s love of music and singing was also a reflection of who she was.
Singing good morning, fun tunes, classical songs, they all flowed from her beautiful voice.
Even in her 90s her voice could ring true and beautiful with amazing power and strength.
All of us inherited her love of music with a diversity of skills among us.
One of her proudest moments was when her New Mexico choir was invited to Westminster Abbey, England, to sing in the church. Over to England she went and sang.
As she got older and living farther away, we would sing to each other over the phone.
I would end each phone call with singing Roy Rogers, “Happy Trails”
Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.
It's the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you.
Happy trails to you,
Until we meet again.
Happy trails to you,
Keep smiling until then.
Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather.
Happy trails to you,
Until we meet again.
Happy Trails Mom!

Hi Heidi,
My heart goes out to you to have to say goodbye to your dear Mom. She just comes alive when I read your experiences with her. She was such a kook, by her own admission, and lovable always, bringing a smile to my face even when I was being a rather irascible adolescent.
I'd love to be in touch to hear about your life out West.
Hugs and love,
Beth

Hi Anthea,
Thanks so much for sending along these photos! I haven't seen much of the Uptegrove clan since 'moving' to NZ, so it's such a delight to see that everyone is still just as deliriously idiosyncratic as they've always been.
And, obviously you have an appreciation for them as well. A belated welcome to you!
Hugs and sympathy to you both.
Aroha nui,
Beth
