Obituary of John E. Hein
John Edward Hein passed away on April 19, 2023. He was 75 years old.
Born and raised in Staten Island, NY, to parents Lloyd William and Mary (Turner) Hein, John raised his children in several towns in New Jersey before settling in Boonton, NJ, 17 years ago.
John was a graduate of Curtis High School and received his BBA from Pace University Pleasantville Campus. He began his career in Computer Sales at IBM and worked for many other companies including Software Plus, Interboro Systems, Andrews Consulting, and Circular Edge.
John was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America, being an active member for over 45 years in total. As a youth, he earned his Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm and God & Country awards in 1963 and raised the American flag at the opening of the Verrazano Bridge (which he would later do again on the 25th and 50th anniversaries of the event). He was most recently a Committee Member of Troop 72, Associate Advisor of Crew 890—both of Parsippany, NJ—and a member of the President’s Council for Patriots’ Path Council (PPC). He had previously received the Brotherhood honor in the Order of the Arrow, was inducted into PPC’s Eagle Hall of Fame in 2013, and was PPC’s first Alumnus of the Year in 2015. John was an Eagle Mentor for many aspiring Eagle Scouts in Troops 72 and 177, helping many scouts on their journey to earn the award.
For many years, John was an avid runner, completing the New York City Marathon several times as well as the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington D.C. and a few others. He was also a proud member of the bass section of the NJ Symphonic Choir for 15 years.
John was kind, caring, and notoriously reliable. His hand was always first in the air any moment a volunteer was needed, and he was never shy about contributing to a worthy cause. He was incredibly proud of his family and his grandchildren were the light of his life. He never missed a play or recital, and donated more Girl Scout cookies to the troops than could be counted. Every opportunity he had to see his family he seized, and the lessons he taught will live on through them.
John is survived by his children—son John and wife Paula Hein of Middlesex, NJ; son David and wife Jodie Hein of Bordentown, NJ; daughter Antares Turdiu and husband Tyler Gulick of Mendham, NJ; son Rigel Turdiu of New Providence, NJ—and grandchildren Brittney App & Erin Hein, Katherine & Lauren Hein, and Castor & Nash Gulick.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 28, from 4-8 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham. A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, April 29, at 11 AM at Bailey Funeral Home, Mendham. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to Talbot Interfaith Shelter.
