“Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them: they can be injured by us, they can be wounded; they know all our penitence, all our aching sense that their place is empty, all the kisses we bestow on the smallest relic of their presence.” I shared this news clipping and these photos with my daughter, along with this text, "That is your Great-Grandmother. She lived to be 90. Some of her life story was documented in that news article I started off this series of texts with. He life arc is a positive one…one of strength…one of courage…one of perseverance. Felt you should know of her existence as you’ve only seen examples of women who choose the role of professional victim." I was drawn to the news clipping and those particular photos because they reflect the Grandmother who I see in my mind's eye. My daughter, Mima's Great-Grandaughter, responded to that series of texts by saying, "She seems like an incredible lady. I keep reading that article and thinking how different our lives would have been had she not done that, that’s truly incredible." I told my daughter that I know how different our lives would have been. Simply put, without Mima's courage, strength, and perseverance, our lives wouldn't have existed at all. My interpretation of the famous quote I started with is this, "Those we love, and those who loved us, are never truly lost so long as we never forget them.". Mima has always been with me, and will continue to be with me until I take my last breath. I am certain anyone who Mima touched will ensure she is never forgotten, thus she will never truly be lost to us.

I am deeply saddened by this tragic loss. To say Mina’s life story is incredible would be an understatement. She and her husband took a huge risk to escape the Cuba of Fidel Castro. That act would allow her children to flourish and have many children of their own. As a friend of the family I can honestly say we will always keep her in our hearts and prayers.

Losing a family member is very hard, especially someone with such a strong character and desire to live like Aunt Berta! I did not have the pleasure of growing up with her but I did have the immense pleasure of knowing her to give her a little family love in life and fill her with her Cuban roots. She loved eating her enchilado de Cangrejos that reminded her of her beloved Caibarien homeland . I received so much from her! Her stories about my grandparents and my father filled my heart with pleasure! Thank you aunt, may God welcome you in her sanctuary, her temple. In the name of uncle Luis Rojas! Ibrain Rojas, Aunt Rosa Roja and myself, we wish to offer our deepest condolences to the rest of the family, to all their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, may God give them strength and wisdom at this time.
