Dearest Ann and wonderful Rhatican Family-
It is with the deepest sympathy, that we write this note of condolence to you all. My timing was never impeccable as obvious here with my note hopefully reaching you in mid September and Peter's passing in June. This did not mean we did not take the news any lighter, in fact more troubling where as we were not there in person to pay our warmest respect to you all and Peter.
Having a local watering hole within less than two miles of the funniest, Mr. Personality, and most amazingly social attorney in the State of New Jersey, one could not help knowing Peter E. Rhatican.
We will always remember his quick wit and true friendship. The saddest part is that we met at Sapori Restaurant what seems like only a few weeks before Peter's passing while he was dining with his Best Friend Norman and lovely wife Karen.
Ann, Deidre and I will place Peter's memory in our daily prayers. We will also pray for you and your family. God Bless Peter Rhatican.
All our Love,
Deidre & David Karner

Dear Ann and family,
Please accept my condolences and deepest sympathies at Peter‘s passing. I was in the class of 1962 at Saint Benedict’s and played baseball with Pete. While it has been far too long since I had last seen Pete, I can say without hesitation that he was just one of those people when his name was mentioned it conjured up all kinds of wonderful memories. What is everlasting in my mind is looking at “Rhat” and wondering what is going on behind those smiling eyes and eternal smirk.
Pete was a joy to be with, and I am deeply saddened at his passing. He will be the First Team Catcher on God’s team.
May He Rest In Peace.

Peter was my freshman football and baseball coach at St Benedict’s. 1968-1969. I left St Benedict’s in 1970 but I never forgot the things he taught me. I never saw him after I left but I thought about him quite often. He was a great man and a terrific coach. I am so sorry to hear this sad news. May he RIP.

I first met Peter in 1969 when we were first-year law students at Seton Hall. He asked me if I wanted to join a study group with him, Dennis Brew and Santo LaLomia. I could not imagine why three guys, the product of a Catholic education since grammar school wanted to include a Jew. Pete and Dennis were already married with children so I had to decide if I wanted to get involved with Walt Clever and Ozzie Nelson. Whatever it was it worked and we all became close friends.
I played on a softball team in South Orange and when I found out how good a player Pete was I insisted he join the team. We went from average to winning almost every game. The other team always wanted to know where I got this "ringer" who seemingly hit a double or home run almost every at-bat.
In 1973 Pete got me a job where he worked at the State Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. We saw each other eight hours a day. We studied for the bar exam together. I was sitting in Pete's office when our wives called and told us we passed. I'm 5'6' Pete picked me up like I was 7 and we hugged for 5 minutes. Afterward, we gave each other a look like how did we manage to pull this off. Over the years we just drifted apart. But , there's not a week go by without me thinking of those halcyon days.
When I learned of his passing I was profoundly saddened. My deepest condolences to Ann and the children

We have lost a Good Man.
Some of my earliest memories of Mr. Rhatican are hearing him yelling from the stands during our South Orange Villagers football games. He had a booming voice; you knew it was him. He was my best buddy's Dad and his cheering pumped us up!
In person that deep, authoritative, sometimes sarcastic voice could be intimidating. As a teenager and young man you quickly knew to respect it. Even fear it, perhaps.
I have joked how scary it must have been to be on the opposing side of that voice and intellect in the court room!
He was my baseball coach, too, and there he was also tough. He loved the game and he played No Favorites.
But I know I came to be one of his favorites. Or he sure made me feel that way :)
Our relationship grew to a very warm and special one. I appreciated his stories, his wisdom and his love. I loved him dearly, as I know you all did, too, and we will miss him very much.
My deep condolences to his lifelong counterpart, "Mrs. R", Pete, Emily, "Ats", Billy, and the rest of the gang.
Rest in Peace, Mr Rhatican. Thank you for the memories.
Love,
KG Swan
