Neil and I practically started life together in an apartment house in Rego Park, Queens, in the mid- to late- '40s and went to Forest Hills High School together. His mother Edith was a very bright, energetic and inspirational woman, and his step father was the same. (Neil was born Nathinson.) He was also bright and introspective and given to thinking about challenging things, not sports. That rubbed off on me subconsciously. He therefore played a major, if sublimated, role in my life. It is the world's loss as well as that of his loved ones and friends. RIP, old and appreciated friend.
