Obituary of Joseph A Maio, Jr., DDS

Joseph A. Maio, Jr. —‘Joe’ to those who knew him—passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2019. He was 76 years old.

Born in Passaic and raised in Lodi, New Jersey, to parents Joseph and Josephine (nee Nasta) Maio, Joe attended college at Seton Hall University and graduated as a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Temple Dental School. He entered the Army during the Vietnam War, serving as Captain in the Dental Corps for two years at Madigan General Hospital at Ft. Lewis in Tacoma, Washington, with his wife, Patricia. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his “energetic and devoted” service.

Joe built his home and raised his family in Mendham, NJ, where he lived for 35 years. He established his dental practice in his childhood community of Lodi, NJ, where he worked for 44 years, serving loyal patients with compassionate care. When he wasn’t working, Joe was always doing something he loved. In winter, he could be found skiing in Stowe, VT, or Camelback, PA—even one summer in Chile, South America. When the weather got warm you could find him golfing Eagles Mere Country Club, canoeing in Eagles Mere Lake, or swimming in the Bernardsville town pool with his children and grandchildren. No matter what time of year, Joe could be found fulfilling his duties as a founding member of the Allegheny Boys Club, traveling with his family to his favorite vacation spots—Disney World and Williamsburg, VA—or soaking up U.S. history with visits to Hyde Park, Jockey Hollow, or reading presidential biographies. Without a doubt, though, his biggest passion was his family; Joe was a doting husband, a loving father, a cherished grandfather, and an amazing friend to all who knew him.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Patricia, daughter Jenny (Todd) Barton, son Josh (Kellie), sister Anne Costanzo, and grandchildren Ella, Gray and George Barton, and Madison Maio.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 10, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd, Mendham, NJ. A funeral service will take place on Friday, January 11, at 10 AM at the Hilltop Church, 20 Hilltop Rd, Mendham, NJ.
