Obituary of Sister Thomasine Smith
Sister Thomasine Smith, Sister of Christian Charity, entered eternal life on December 28, 2018, at the Motherhouse, Mendham, NJ.
Sister was 74 years of age.
Born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, August 27, 1944, Sister Thomasine was the daughter of Anna Mabel (Keagy) and Mark Stanislaus Smith. In addition to her parents, her brothers, Msgr. Thomas Smith and Mark Smith, Jr. as well as her sisters, Rose and Frances went to heaven.
Sister Thomasine entered the Sisters of Christian Charity on September 3, 1962, professed her first vows on August 21, 1965 and made her final profession of vows on August 15, 1971.
In her early years of religious life, Sister used her culinary skills and worked as a homemaker in convents in Pennsylvania and at the Motherhouse in New Jersey. After 33 years, she cared for her elderly Mother for three years. Sister then began a new ministry as Pastoral Associate at St. Mary’s Parish in Wharton, NJ from 2001-2013 where she organized the religious education program for children and also provided social and spiritual activities for the Senior Citizens of the area in addition to sponsoring projects to help those in need. Several surgeries warranted her recuperation at the Motherhouse from September 2013 to September 2014. Following her years of apostolic service, Sister was assigned to the Holy Family Convent in Pennsylvania due to health reasons and in July 2018 moved to the new Motherhouse in Mendham, New Jersey.
Sister Thomasine is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Mark, SCC, five sisters, Dolores Byron, Kathleen Smith, Mary Ann Roberts, Linda Mummert, Jeanne Smith and two brothers, Donald Smith and Larry Smith and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be on January 1, from 2-7 pm with Evening prayer at 7:00 in the Chapel of Mary Immaculate, Motherhouse, Mendham, NJ.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, January 2 at 11:00 at the Motherhouse with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery on the Motherhouse property.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sister Thomasine can be made to the Sisters of Christian Charity, Mendham, NJ.
