Obituary of Sophie Swatsworth

Sophie Wilhelmina Swatsworth was born October 21, 1927 in Newark, NJ. Sophie graduated from the former Southside H.S.  In October of 1959 Sophie and her family moved to Mendham, NJ and built the house that she lived in until her passing.

For more than 30 years she was a salesperson and cashier at the Mendham Apothecary/Pharmacy .  While there, she was a welcoming presence always ready with a genuine smile and hello for all those she greeted.  Sophie was famous among her family and friends for the astounding body of needlework projects that she completed.  If you were a friend of hers, guaranteed you had not one , but probably several of her works displayed in your house.  She had a strong network of friends who cared about her, and she them.

Sophie and Jack were regulars at Monmouth Park , where Jack would study the racing form and Sophie would do her needlework or read a novel.  The day was always finished off with dinner at one of their Jersey Shore restaurant haunts.

We all had a very long good bye with her as Alzheimer’s slowly and painfully took her from us.  She is missed, but has left us with the best of memories.

She was predeceased by her husband Jack of 61 years, and her grandson Jackson.  She is survived by John and Sheila Swatsworth of Chester, NJ, Robert and Sarah Swatsworth of High Bridge, NJ, David and Emily Wagner and Harper and Finley of Long Valley, NJ, and Patrick and Sarah Swatsworth of Wilmington, De.

Visitation will held on Thursday Nov. 8, 2018 from 12 noon until 1pm at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd., Mendham.   The Funeral Service will be held at 1pm in the funeral home.  Interment Mendham Hilltop Cemetery.  For those desiring, donations to the Mendham Borough Library, in her memory, would be appreciated. www.baileyfuneral.com
