I'm a long time fan of RRE, a hobo if you will.
Every time I saw Railroad Earth, live or on recorded shows or DVD, I was always drawn to watching intently, Andy's mastery of the many instruments he played always intrigued me. (How could it not)
His musical prowess is almost legendary.
One of my favorite stories or memories was of a time when we went to Dollywood, (OK,,,shuddup!) and Andy was kind enough to sit in for someone who had become ill. Typical for Andy, he graciously drove from Jersey to Pennsylvania to make sure an old friend was able to perform.
It was brutally hot that August afternoon. But after the set he was gracious enough to stand and talk with me.
I walked up to him as he was leaving the stage, and when he realized I wished to chat, he was more then open to the idea.
Talent. Genuine. True. Gracious. Sincere.
I'll be honest. I haven't been this shocked, or hurt by one's sudden passing since SRV.
R.I.P. Andy.
You'll be forever fondly remembered for your musical talents, but perhaps just as much for the type of human being you were.
Thank you kind sir!

I only recently heard this sad news.
Andy had such a brightness from the get-go. One of the first times I met him, he was about 10 and had just figured out how to play some bagpipe he'd scored. He didn't have the lung power yet to inflate it, so hooked it up to the rear of the family vacuum cleaner and started wailing. And then he'd crack up. Another time, about the same age, here he comes playing a duet for soprano recorders stuck up each nostril. And then he'd crack up. When we ran into each other as adults he was that same playful guy and always-surprising, bone-deep musician. What a lovely, gifted human being. I'm so glad to have known him.
My heartfelt sympathies to all his family and friends.

Andy took his gentleness and joyfully shared both from the stage as if he were a magician and healed others with his presence and music. It was wonderful to see him switch instruments and show how all were connected.
He will be sorely missed. His soul soars so high and through all time that words don’t describe it in the least.
Blessings from all sources to his family.

Dear Andy,
Thank you for your friendship and your insight into my work. I always looked forward to our seemingly endless dialogue about all things musical , especially those things with wood and strings. I will miss your visits to Nashville and look back on some pleasant times spent with you during your down time from the band. Godspeed, Gentle Soul.

Andy, Still just heartbroken at your passing. My sincere condolences to Alison and the rest of your family and friends.
I just ordered new strings for the taterbug Mandolin, that you carved a new bridge for, way long ago, 1970 something.
You were such a sweet, kind person, Andy, say hi to Buck and Tucker. You shed a lot of light and happiness. What could be a better legacy.

To the Goessling family, I want to take this time to give my condolences for your huge loss. My husband and I follow Railroad Earth and many times we would exchange kind words to Andy about his performances at the concerts. We just saw them at Horn o Plenty and there was such a void. I am sure the band is suffering immensely from Andy's passing. God had blessed all of us with Andy's talent and just his being! God speed Andy! You all will be in our prayers during this difficult time.

I remember moving to Mendham at 15 Andy was 9 yrs old then. It was always intriguing and delightful to visit the Goesslings’ household full of siblings, books and a welcome at the door. His brother Bob was a friend then. Bob’s younger brother Andy was playing his recorder, clarinet and the mandolin, fixing instruments and building a most ingenious treehouse in the woods with friends and siblings. We were filled with the enthusiasm of youth and the energy that it brings. Fond memories !
Time passed and many years later Andy and I would bump in to each other by chance out of the blue. What fun it was.
I enjoyed listening to Andy play at the Morristown Coffee House at the Unitarian church and then again in Montclair to Railroad Earth.
Andy brought a simplicity of the heart full of warmth, human and genuine. The way it’s suppose to be.
My deep sympathies and condolences to Andy’s wife, family and friends.

I have been lucky enough to see Railroad Earth perform many times over the years. We’ve also been graced with opportunity to share the stage with them in our home town, and of most recent perform at their beloved Hillberry Music Festival. I did not have a personal relationship with Andy, but I did study him, and the rest of the band for many years. Having not gone to much college—watching musicians of such caliber is sort of like attending years of lectures from a brilliantly whacky college professor that you don’t ever meet, or get to talk to.
Luckily for me— I was fortunate enough to meet Andy one time , when I attended one of his workshops. He really did have just about every bizarre instrument you could think of— and he could play them all with extreme proficiency. In response to someone’s question about what he thinks about in regard to music theory when performing/improvising, he responded: “I try to practice to the point where I don’t think about anything— and that is when the music can truly flow.”
I thanked him after the workshop and discussed my goofy experiences , and concept of Didgeridobro: the art of combining sounds of the didgeridoo and dobro. He thought about it for a second, got a twinkle in his eye, and responded: “yeah that would work.” He was a man that not only inspired in regards to practice and discipline— but also that silly creative spark that provides limitless originality. I wish I could have gotten to know him better in years to come, but I am grateful I was able to see such a talented musician perform many times. Thanks Andy.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your dear Andy. I had a chance to share the stage with Andy several times when I was on tour singing with Willy Porter. I first met Andy Goessling when he was13 yrs. old. I was about 19-20yrs old. I had a band called Easy Wind and then the " Lost World String Band". We went to see The "Bottle Hill" band at the Gypsy in Long Valley, N.J.where we had a farmhouse.Barry Mitterhoff (mandolin) was one of Andy's mentors at this time.Barry of Bottle Hill called up on stage a young shy boy to play mandolin. Andy got up there and blew everyone's mind! I became friends with Andy and we started playing together. We did many shows mostly opening for bluegrass stars such as, Bill Monroe,Mac Wiseman, David Bromberg, The Seldom Scene ect. This was in the early seventies. We also played at parties, bars, and anywhere we could, including playing on the street for tips. Later we were in a band called Bill Kelly and The House of Cards. I have been friends with Andy all these years. He lived about 15 minutes from me. We would get together and pick, and discuss vintage instruments which we both loved. In the last few years, when he was not on the road he would stop by to play and talk about about old times. We also would do local gigs. Andy called me to to do a show with The Nitty Gritty Band( 50th anniversary tour) who were a very big influence on both of us. What a night!
I always loved Andy and I will miss him more than anyone can imagine

My sincere condolences to Andy's family. He was one of the most talented musicians with whom I ever had the opportunity to play. We played a few memorable gigs as a duo and he was a great contributor to The Band With a Thousand Names CD and live performances. He also contributed tracks to my first CD recorded at Mixolydian Studio with engineer Don Sternecker. I remember how startled Don was when Andy took an amazing solo on two saxes at once. Andy had a great sense of humor to go along with his impeccable musical abilities..He was the most frequent of all visitors to the Folk Project's TV series, because he played in so many different groups and also performed as a solo. He will be sorely missed.

Andy was one of very few people who could change the way you think just by talking to you. He was of an insightful kind who always surprised with his thoughtfulness and ability to spin something in a positive "as it shoud be" direction. My sense of humor was shaped in no small part by listening to Andy's observations on happenings both small and large in real time interaction. I'd like to think that I could crack him up too, but somehow, I think he already knew all the jokes. He just enjoyed sharing the humor/wisdom with anyone who was starting to get it for themselves. He was ahead of us on many levels. Andy was a patient, empathetic, encouraging, loving, honest and forgiving man with the greatest sense of propriety of anyone I have ever known. Thank you for sharing some of yourself with me, Andy. I wish I had had more time with you now of course, but I have a lot to be thankful for with all that traveling and gig-life that we did share. I will miss you badly dear friend, but will carry your spirit as best I can with me. I hope we meet again for a couple of laughs somewhere on the other side of earthly time....

My condolences to Andy's family and friends and everyone who loved Andy and his music. Andy and I shared a powerful friendship bond through our love for music, art, film, antiques, nature and travel. Andy has had a long and brilliant musical career playing in many bands, but did not think of himself as a solo artist for the longest time. I always thought that people should have the chance to listen to Andy play an entire song besides his shorter solos. l am honored to have worked with Andy since 2014 on his one-of-a-kind multi-instrumental solo shows and help showcase his genius during the Zither Revival Tours. Andy was very proud, enthusiastic and energized to have produced a beautiful video Waiting for Zitherman and to have full creative control of his solo projects. I wish we had the chance to do the multi-instrumental solo shows combined with a zither exhibit and the art gallery tour he planned on. I hope his large and unique zither collection will be well preserved in his memory, as he was the only non-traditional zither virtuoso in North America.
I am honored to have worked with the uniquely brilliant, down to earth music legend Andy Goessling is (I know he would laugh to hear me say this) to have contributed a small amount to his legacy and I feel absolutely blessed for having shared so many wonderful memories ever the years.Much love and rest in peace Andy! Bring the zither magic to the other side!
