Obituary of Mary Hughes
Mary Alice Hughes passed away August 14th, 2017 at 80 years of age at the Center for Hope Hospice Center and Palliative Care in Scotch Plains, New Jersey after a valiant, year long fight with cancer.
Mary was born on January 6th, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, the eldest daughter and second eldest child of Clara and Bernard Fitzgerald. Mr. Fitzgerald was an up and coming lawyer who moved the family to Chevy Chase, Maryland when Mrs. Hughes was four years old. Growing up in Maryland, Mrs. Hughes helped take care of her younger brothers and sisters, Ann, Patricia (“Pat”), John (“Johnny”), Kevin, and Claire (“Dede”) Fitzgerald.
Mary loved to learn, and in high school she especially loved mathematics and chemistry classes. Raised in a household in which her father challenged the minds of his children every day at dinner and read the newspapers to all of them as toddlers, Mrs. Hughes wished to continue her education after high school. She worked and paid her way through college, having earned a full academic scholarship to St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana. She also took various classes at both Georgetown and the University of Maryland while employed by AT&T. Mrs. Hughes graduated with a degree in dietary nutrition with a minor in chemistry from the University of Maryland.
She married William Hughes on February 4th, 1961, and they lived in Maplewood, NJ before moving to Rockville, MD and later to Bound Brook and Middlesex, NJ. While living in Bound Brook and Middlesex she worked full-time at a local insurance agency. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church. In her spare time, she loved to do crossword puzzles and sudoku, read about history and science, experiment in the kitchen, browse L.L. Bean online, and visit with her family, whom she loved “lots and lots and a whole great big bunch.”
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her husband, William, her children, William (Patricia), Michael (Lorena), Bernard (“Dennis”), John, Ann Quidore (Chris), and David (Jennifer), her brothers and sisters, Bernard Fitzgerald, Ann Gerard, Patricia Fitzgerald, Kevin Fitzgerald, and Claire Jentsch, her grandchildren, Jason Hughes (Dianne), Ashley Rosario (Manny), Danielle Hughes, Rachel Hughes, Jillian Hughes, Alyssa Hughes, Veronica Quidore, Lauren Hughes, and Rebecca Hughes, and her great-grandson, Benjamin Rosario.
Mrs. Hughes lived a life of selflessness, graciousness, compassion, kindness, hard work, intellect, and bravery and shaped the lives of all whom she knew. She will be missed greatly.
A memorial Mass is planned October 7th at 11am at Our Lady of Mt Virgin, Middlesex, NJ. Donations may be made to The Center for Hope Hospice 1900 Raritan Road, Scotch Plains NJ 07076.
