I have always had a special place in my heart for Coach Zedalis; I recently learned of his passing. He came to Somerville High School during my sophomore year there in 1957 as the JV basketball coach under Vaughn Stapleton. When Coach Stapleton left in 1958, Coach Zedalis became the Varsity basketball coach, and I progressed along with him. So, I was one of the few who played for him for three years. They were enjoyable years, and we improved, both individually and as a team, under his tutelage to where we were 15 - 3 for the 1959 - 1960 season. We won't forget his running one-handers that he learned to love during his stint with the Baltimore Bullets; and, yes, no one wanted to guard him when he actively, and fervently, participated in our practices!
In short, we loved playing basketball, and we loved it even more because of Coach Zedalis. So long, Coach!

Coach Zedalis was my respected high school coach in 1961 and 1962 during my junior and senior years at Somerville. He led us to 17-7 and 21-3 seasons where we won the county championships both years. I have nothing but fond memories of him as both a teacher and coach, but most of all as a decent human being who always believed in "team first"! His style was laid-back, but he could be tough when he had to be! (like the day he didn't start me because I was 5 minutes late to practice the day before!)
I remember hearing about how he was a standout at Loyola, and sometimes after practice we would play "Out" or "Horse"....Most of the time HE won!
I'm sorry to have heard of his passing too late to attend his services, but grateful that I visited him( along with two former players, Mike Cardillo and Billy Garbarini) just a few years ago in his Hillsborough home. He still had that same sense of humor and laid back spirit, and we all had a great time talking about our teams and the Somerville "Glory Days"!
Rest in Peace, Coach!
