Obituary of John Joseph LoPorto
John J. LoPorto passed away peacefully on Sept. 27, 2016 at Morristown Medical Center. He was 92.
Born in Weehawken, N.J. he lived in Jersey City and Cliffside Park before moving to Mendham Twp. in 1961.
He earned a degree of Mechanical Engineer from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1946, following service as a Navy Lieutenant during WWII. He continued at Stevens to earn a Master of Science degree in Mathematics and Physical Science and a second graduate degree with a M.S. in Computer Science. He also earned an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Engineering from Stevens, as well as a certificate from NYU in Executive Management. He was a longtime Trustee of the Steven Institute.
As an undergraduate, John enjoyed baseball and football. He was an avid golfer and sailor throughout his adult life. Although he had many career accomplishments, he was most proud of Alberta Gas Chemicals, a company he founded which became the largest producer of methanol in the world.
His family will remember him as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Nancy, in 2010 and his sisters Carol and Marie.
He is survived by four daughters: Nancy Sperte and her husband Robert of Middletown, NY; Donna Klein and her husband Ken of Long Valley, NJ; Jean LoPorto of Middletown, NY; and Barbara LoPorto-Stahl and her husband Tim of Parsippany, NJ. He has five grandchildren: Lauren Klein- Juneau, Jonathan Klein, Brook and Ryan Yamakoshi, and Briana Stahl.
Visitation will be held at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd., Mendham on Friday, September 30th from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the “LoPorto Graduate Fellowship” at Steven’s Institute of Technology, Office of Development, 1 Castle Point Terrace, Hoboken, NJ 07030 would be appreciated.
