Obituary of Daniel Thomas Scott
Daniel Thomas Scott passed away quietly on September 21, 2016, at the age of 72, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Jersey City to Walter G. Scott and Joan Bosquett, he lived in Jersey City and Manhattan before moving to Mendham in 1977. He received his BA from The University of Notre Dame, his MBA from New York University Stern School of Business, and a Ph.D in Economics from the New School.
Mr. Scott was President and CEO of UNZ & Co. and Scott Printing Corp. for many years. His company received the E Star Award from President William J. Clinton, given for significant contributions to United States exports.
He was honorably discharged from the Army National Guard of New Jersey and as a reserve of The Army in 1973.
Mr. Scott was an alumnus and parent of alumni of The Delbarton School and served as a member of the Delbarton Lay Board of Trustees since 1997. He was Chairman of the Lay Board from 2003 until his death. In addition, he was President of the Fathers and Friends organization and was inducted into the Delbarton School Hall of Honor in 1997, given to him for initiating the 'Give a Boy a Year' Scholarship Program. He served as Board Chairman at Summit Speech School, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, Chairman of Hudson County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Director of Schiff Natural Lands Trust Inc, and President of Lincoln Association in Jersey City. He received the 1994 Business Person of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce, New Providence, NJ, and was given the 1989 Humanitarian Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle heart, his generosity, and his ability to find the good in every situation.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Darby Anne Scott (nee Davis): two sons, Daniel D. Scott and his wife, Katy, of Peapack, NJ; and Thomas E. Scott and his wife, Katherine, of Greenwich, CT; one daughter, Katherine Scott Old and her husband, Dr. Andrew Old of Philadelphia, PA: and one brother, Dr. W. Norman Scott and his wife, Dr. Susan Craig Scott, of Key Largo, FL. He is also survived by his cherished granddaughters, Annie and Abigail Old and Annabelle Scott.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Walter G. Scott.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25th from 1-5pm at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ. There will be a Funeral Mass on Monday, September 26th at 11am at St. Mary’s Abbey at Delbarton. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ.
