Obituary of Norman J. Dick, Jr.

Norman J. Dick, Jr. died peacefully on September 12, 2016 at home in Mendham. He was 94. Born April 29, 1922 in Buffalo, NY, he was the third of ten children. The son of Norman J. Dick, Sr. and Helen Ryan Dick, he moved with his family to New York City and later Westbury, Long Island. He shared many stories of growing up on Long Island, sports being a big part of his life. He was an accomplished baseball player, playing third base and actually changing high schools to play a 5th year hoping for a baseball scholarship. Basketball was ultimately the sport that did get him the college scholarship. While attending Westbury High School, Norm was captain and part of the 1939-1940 Westbury High School basketball team that played it’s All County championship game in Madison Square Garden. He was one of the “Fab Five“ for Nassau County High School Basketball. He later played for the Manhattan College basketball team. Norm picked up playing golf after becoming a caddie at the Beth Page public golf course on Long Island while in high school, becoming an avid golfer throughout his adult life. He left Manhattan College to serve in the Army from 1943 – 1946 during WWII, returning to finish at Manhattan College, graduating with his degree in electrical engineering and ultimately being hired by the National Biscuit Company, actually working alongside his father. He was also an Alumni of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program. While with Nabisco, he worked in many of the bakeries across the country. While in Chicago he met and married his wife Peggy in 1954, continuing his career in Nabisco bakeries such as Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Jersey, Chicago and New Jersey again, finally settling in Mendham in 1972 with his now family of eight. Norm retired as Vice President of Manufacturing for Nabisco Brands in East Hanover in 1987, having a 39-year career that was full of both personal and professional achievement. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Church, Mendham Golf and Tennis Club and the Pastime Club all of Mendham. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3401 in Morris Plains, the American Legion Post 342 Chester and the B.P.O. E. Lodge 410 in Madison. In addition, Norm was a little league coach in Mendham Twp. for the Coutts and the Colonials. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret McCarthy Dick, three brothers, Leo Dick, Robert Dick, Dr. Harold Dick and four sisters Jeanne Watson, Mary Lou Westwood, Nan Jones and Donna Halleck. He is survived by three sons Norman J. “Jay” Dick III of Bozeman, MT. and his wife, Kelly, Kevin M. Dick of Chester and his wife Lori, Bryan R. Dick of Sarasota, FL, and three daughters Barbara Jensen of Mendham, Peggy Crosby of Morris Plains and her husband Chris and Patricia Murphy of Los Angeles, CA. and her husband Joe. Norm also leaves behind 11 cherished grandchildren – Lindsay, Norman J. IV “Jared” and Brennan Dick, Travis, Eva and Dana Jensen, Sean, Colin, Andrew and Paige Crosby and Reese Murphy.
