Obituary of Peter Mead Detwiler

Peter Mead Detwiler, 87, formerly of Bedminster, died peacefully on January 9th, 2016 at Hunterdon Medical Center. Mr. Detwiler was born in Detroit, MI to Ward Arnold Detwiler and Grace Margaret Albert on June 7, 1928. He grew up in Grosse Pointe, MI, and lived briefly in London before settling in Bedminster where he lived for many years. He resided most recently in Annandale, NJ. He graduated from Saint Mark's School, Southborough, MA and received his BA from Trinity College, Hartford, CT. He received an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1953. Mr. Detwiler was an Investment Banker. He started his career at J. Schroder Wagg & Co., Ltd., the London merchant bankers and joined EF Hutton in New York City, rising to Vice Chairman of the Board in 1972 before retiring in 1988. He served on the Board of many companies, including Bryant & Detwiler, Tesoro Petroleum Corporation, and Gulf Stream Aerospace Corporation. He was also Governor and Sr. Vice Chairman of the Board of the Flight Safety Foundation. Mr. Detwiler was an avid fox hunter with the Metamora Hunt in MI and the Essex Fox Hounds in NJ. He was an enthusiastic sailor, and a devoted operator of amateur radio. He founded a marine communications company and developed a novel marine communications system for which he received a patent. He was also a longtime member of the Knickerbocker Club in New York City. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, 3 daughters, Susan Nitahara (Anthony Notaro), Libbet Regan (Andy) and Mary Daly (John) as well as 6 grandchildren, Lauren, Christopher, Alex, Billy, Spencer and Grace. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Thursday Jan. 14, 2016 at 10:30 am at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Gladstone, NJ. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Green Hall at the Church. The internment will follow the reception and will take place in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bernardsville, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
