I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the Backer family. I was introduced for the first time to Mr. Backer nearly 20 years ago through his daughter Lee Ann. He was kind, generous and humble. Between Fred and his late wife, Barbara, it was quickly evident where Lee Ann had acquired those same qualities. I know how beloved he was by not only the family but the community. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. As they say, they don't make em' like that anymore.

I only really conversed with Fred once, at Liz and Joe's wedding, but his toughness and honesty left a lasting impression on me. I admire his lifelong commitment to farming and community. I'm sure he was a good family man. On a more selfish note, I really enjoyed having a pool at a wedding! May your soul rest in peace and love and condolences to your family and friends

Dear Family Members,
It was such a pleasure for so many years seeing Fred on the farm on Ironia Road, always doing something... always busy... an amazing hard worker. He welcomed us to Ironia Road more than 21 years ago and supplied our hay for a long time. We so much enjoyed our little chats with Fred. We will miss him, and we extend to you our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Backer Family.
If you look over the back pasture fence, you will see my old log cabin, and my father, Judd's place with the pond. We were "back door" neighbors since I was a child. Older brother Joe delivered our milk, and Fred ran the farm.
When I need the front field mowed, I called Fred.
When the big oak tree in my yard need to be removed, I called Fred.
When I saw a little fox terrier in the barn, Joe gave it to me.
My very first barn dance was at the new Backer Barn circa 1950.
When my pet sheep, Wooly, went missing, I called Fred.
When 5 mad horses broke loose from the Backer Farm, I called Fred.
Blessings to all, Carolyn

My condolences to Steve and all of the Backer family. I have great memories of Fred and seeing his work ethic first hand while I was shoeing horses and buying hay at the farm. There didn't seem to be any quit in him! He defined the words real and genuine. I will have a bottle of Killian to his life. I think he would like that!

Fred, Jr. and the entire Backer Family,
Growing up with a great "salt of the earth," caring and fun family like yours is what made growing up in Mendham so so special. I thank you from the bottom of my heart and will cherish your Dad and your dedication/friendship forever. I especially remember how supportive Fred and Barbara were of all our school, sports and farm activities. Your Dad was always "there for me" with a smile, a waive from his tractor, or a chat. Fred will always be a true blessing to the Mendham area and all the lucky people who knew him and his family. He certainly will be missed, but his spirit will guide and inspire all to be dedicated to the land, to their families and to the communities/country they live in.
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in this sad loss of your Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle Great Grandpa and Best Friend!
With Gratitude and Fond Memories, Jane
