Obituary of Augustus S. Knight, Jr
Augustus S. Knight, Jr. passed away on August 25,2015 after a long illness.
He was born in New York City on June 17,1931 to Dr. Augustus S. and Anita Merle-Smith Knight. His youth was spent in Bedminster Township. He was a 1953 graduate of Hamilton College where he earned a BA degree then went on to Columbia University where he completed a Master's degree in geology in 1954. From there he moved to Texas where he worked for Mobil Oil until 1971. He and his family then moved back to Chester Township where he became a farmer of beef cattle and hay.
During that time he served on the Chester Township Board of Health, Environmental Commission, and Morris County Solid Waste Advisory Committee. He was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Gladstone.
He served the U.S. Navy as a draftee in late 1955 until September 1957.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jane (Brown) Knight, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his children, Virginia and James, his parents and two sisters, Anne Dennis and Sally Bond.
A memorial service will take place at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Gladstone, on Sunday, September 27 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers a contribution in his name may be given to either the Community Soup Kitchen, 36 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960 or the Chester First Aid Squad.
