Obituary of Leonard Massen

Leonard Massen of Edison, NJ died peacefully on the morning of Oct 16th at the home of his granddaughter Jenny Morris and her husband Greg Morris, in Gladstone, NJ. He was 98. He was born in Bronx, NY to Zelda (Jenny) Breakstone and Joseph Massen. He lived and raised his two daughters in Verona, New Jersey before moving to Scotch Plains and then to Edison 20 years ago. He was a longtime member of Shackamaxon Golf Club in Scotch Plains, where he leaves behind a cherished circle of friends. He received his B.A. Degree from New York University. Mr. Massen practiced as a Certified Public Accountant from 1936 until 2007, when he retired at age ninety two. He was a partner of Fluhr, Massen and Licht of New York City. His family will remember him as a loving husband, companion, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who exemplified all the virtues of his proud, hardworking generation. He served his country during the Second World War as a Chief Warrant Officer. His beloved wife of fifty-two years, Sylvia Surpin, died in 1992. His brother, Arthur Massen, also predeceased Mr. Massen. He is survived by his treasured companion of 20 years, Terry Tannebaum of Edison, New Jersey and Laguna Woods, California. He leaves behind his two daughters, Nancy Massen, of New York City and Jo Ann Issenman and her husband Barry Perzow, formerly of Montreal, and recently of Gladstone, New Jersey. In addition, he leaves behind his granddaughter Jenny Morris and her husband Greg, their children Sophie and Noah and his grandson John Issenman and his wife Jordanna and their children Aryeh, and Gabriella A service will be held at Somerset Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum on Frdiay Oct 18, 2013at 10am. The Rabbi John Schecter, of Congregation B’nai Israel, will officiate. Arrangements by the Bailey Funeral Home of Peapack. The family asks that donations be made in his honor to Hunterdon Hospice Foundation, Flemington, NJ.
