Obituary of W. Donald DeWitt
W. Donald DeWitt died peacefully on Aug 29, 2013 at Sunrise of Basking Ridge, where he lived with his wife. He was 87. Born in Elmhurst, NY. He lived in Manhasset, NY for nearly 50 years before moving to Mendham in 2007.
Don DeWitt served in the Navy during WWII from 1944-1946 on the USS Perkins in the Pacific. He was a graduate of Adelphi Universityand received his JD from New York Law. He worked as a special agent in the FBI for 8 years before joining the law practice which his father began. He practiced law until he retired, with offices in Manhasset, Port Washington and JacksonHeights.
He was very active in the Rotary Club of Manhasset and was responsible for bringing the annual children's circus to town in 2001. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, and a past Treasurer, a Junior Achievement leader and he was known for many years for his humorous writing of the club newsletter, where no one was safe from his good natured teasing. He was also known around Manhasset for his column in the Manhasset Press entitled Don DeWitt Dissents.
He was predeceased by his brother William. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Joyce Wetherby DeWitt of Basking Ridge, one daughter Diane Frisch of Mendham and her husband Mark, two grandchildren Michael and Megan Frisch and three nieces and nephews, Bill DeWitt, Jack DeWitt and Cindy DeWitt Iacopella.
Visitation will be held on Saturday Sept 7, 2013 from 9-10am at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd., Mendham. Funeral Service 10am in the funeral home. Graveside service 11:30am at Nassau Knolls Cemetery,Washington, NY. For those desiring, donations to the Rotary Club of Manhasset, P.O.
