Obituary of Norman Leo Henderson
GLADSTONE - Norman L. Henderson, Ph.D passed away at home on Monday, June 10, 2013 after a brief illness. He was 81.
Born in Jersey City to the late Thomas A. and Edna M. (Morrisey) Henderson on February 18, 1932, he was a resident of Gladstone for over 40 years.
He graduated William L. Dickinson High School in June in 1949, and entered Rutgers University College of Pharmacy in September 1949 and graduated in 1953 along with his future wife Sara S. Siro. He became a registered pharmacist in New Jersey in 1954.
Dr. Henderson served with the United States Army medical service in Germany from 1954 until 1956.
After military service, he entered Temple University to pursue his MS and PhD degrees in Pharmaceutics. After completing his degrees, he joined Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River NY in the pharmaceutical research and development division. He was responsible for the development of all new tablet formations. In 1972, he joined Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals (now Sanofi-Aventus) in Bridgewater as director of pharmaceutical research and development. He retired in 1992. He was also a member of the NJ Pharmacist's Association.
Dr. Henderson was a member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Industrial Pharmaceutical Technology/IPT and the Parenteral Drug Society. He served as chairman of several regional meetings for the IPT.
Author of over 12 scientific articles on pharmaceutical product development, he was awarded 12 US Patents primarily for controlled release formulations for both human and veterinary products.
He supported pharmaceutical education by serving on the Rutgers College of Pharmacy Advisory Committee and participated in the pharmacy externship program.
Dr. Henderson served as Cub Master of Pack 80 in Park Ridge for 4 years and also as little league baseball and football coach. InPeapack-Gladstone, he was chairman of Scout Troop 57 in the old scout log cabin.
He was predeceased by his son Kevin in 2001.
Dr. Henderson is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sara S. Siro; two sons, Brian of Piermont NH, and Douglas and his wife Barbara of Basking Ridge; a grandson John, and four nieces.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be from the funeral home on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Brigid R. C. Church 129 Main Street, Peapack, NJ 07977. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Piscataway, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested by the family to the VNA of Somerset Hills, 200 Mt. Airy Road, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920 or to St. Brigid R. C. Church, PO Box 33, Peapack, NJ 07977, in memory of Dr. Henderson.
