Obituary of Robert Sullivan

Gladstone - Robert Sullivan passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 5th, he was 91. Born in Morristown on March 27, 1921 to the late John L. Sullivan and Carrie Metzler, he was a lifetime resident of Peapack Gladstone Borough. Mr. Sullivan began his career at Hill Chevrolet in Gladstone, where he worked for many years for Leonard Hill, long-time friend and employer. In later years he became a foreman for the Bedminster Twp. DPW, retiring after twenty-five years. He was an avid bingo player and a member of the Pottersville Sportsman's Club. Mr. Sullivan's life was dedicated to the service of his community with the Peapack Gladstone Fire Department. He was a 69 year member of the Peapack Gladstone Fire Department, and had served as Department Chief. He was one of the oldest active members of the department, responding to calls as recently as five days ago. He was to receive his 70-year service award in 2013. Mr. Sullivan was well known and respected about town, and was seen daily driving to check on older members of the community. He was known for his gentle manner and the many kindnesses that he showed. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Edith, and by his mother, Carrie Sullivan, and his two brothers, Steve and Jack. He is survived locally by his immediate family, his son Robert G. Sullivan, Ann, and their daughter Caitlin. In addition he also is survived by 4 other grandchildren, Michael, Bobby, Patrick, and Sean, and 4 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, a niece and nephew, and many other relatives of his large family spread across many states. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Sunday, December 9, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Firefighter services will be at the funeral home at 7:30 PM. Funeral Services will be at the funeral home on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Kathy Henry officiating. A fire department escort will lead the procession to the interment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park on Mt. Airy Road in Basking Ridge.
