Obituary of Mary Josephine Lyons

Mary Josephine Lyons (nee Sullivan), passed away on Saturday morning, February 25, 2012, at her home in Mendham after a short illness, at 90 years of age. "Jo" was a caring wife and mother, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and a championship golfer at Mendham Golf and Tennis Club. Jo was born in Newark, NJ to Walter and Mary Josephine Sullivan, and grew up in Westchester County, NY, where she met and married her husband, Dick. Jo and Dick moved their family to Morristown in the mid 1950's, and then to Mendham in the early 1970's. Jo was pre-deceased by her husband Richard J. Lyons in 1988, and is survived by her son Richard J. Lyons, Jr and his wife Hilda of Tampa, Fl, and her daughters, MaryJo Clendenny and her husband Gerald of Randolph, Patricia Werring and her husband John of Mendham Township, Denise Duncan and her husband Richard of Boca Raton, FL, Kathleen Flagstad and her husband David of Sterling, and Deirdre Vogel and her husband John of Pottersville, and her wonderful caregiver and friend Manana. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her love of family, Jo was an avid golfer. She won numerous awards and tournaments at Mendham Golf and Tennis, including repeats as Women's Champion and Women's Senior Champion, and had ?ve "holes in one". She was also a dedicated paddle tennis player. After her husband Dick's death in 1988, Jo moved to Oldsmar Fl, and returned to Mendham in 2003. Visitation Tuesday from 4-8pm at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd. Mendham, NJ. Funeral Mass Wednesday at 10am at The Church of the Assumption in Morristown.
