Obituary of Betty Yoos Steidler
Betty Y. Steidler of Mendham, NJ, passed away on June 16, 2024 - two days after turning 92 - giving her family and friends one last opportunity to wish her a happy birthday as she, in turn, wished them a happy Flag Day.
A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Betty was born on June 14, 1932, in Elizabeth, NJ, to the late Mary (nee Hess) and Fred Yoos. After her graduation from Battin High School as part of the Class of 1950, she began her 11-year career at Standard Oil Development Co. (now EXXON-MOBIL). It was at SOD that she met a handsome engineer, Frank, whom she married in 1957. In 1962, Betty and Frank settled into their new home in Mendham. After raising two children - Paul and Gail, she returned to the workforce with Carteret Savings Bank, where she enjoyed nearly 13 years until her retirement in 1996.
Betty held a deep love for her Mendham community. Throughout her 62 years in the Borough, she dedicated her life to the service of others. She was a member and volunteer at St. Joseph’s Church and a dedicated volunteer at Mendham Borough Library. On any given day, there was a chance you could see her at the Black Horse Tavern, aka “The Pub," where she ordered her favorite -- a Tanqueray, up with a twist.
Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She built a home that was a safe harbor for everyone she loved. Her doors were wide open to anyone who loved someone whom she loved, whether it be a new partner, a friend, or member of the family. She led by example with an uncompromising sense of right and wrong and inspired her family to live up to this value as best they could. Betty was dedicated to enriching the lives of those she loved and the community she called home for over six decades. Those who knew her were recipients of her consistency, love, care, and sense of humor.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Frank, who passed away in 1980. Surviving are her son, Paul F. of Herndon, VA; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Robert Cosgriff of Ballston Lake, NY; six grandchildren - Mark, Kevin, and Peter Steidler and Lauren, Kelly, and Amanda Cosgriff; and a great-grandson, Franklin Robert Cosgriff. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary L. Rousch and Jean C. Munn, and her brother, Robert E. Yoos.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, June 24th, at St. Joseph’s Church in Mendham, NJ. If desired, donations in memory of Betty may be made to the Mendham Borough Library or a charity of your choice.
