Obituary of Jane Brown Knight

Jane Brown Knight of Chester Township, NJ passed away peacefully at Morristown Medical Center, NJ on March 24, 2023, after a short illness.  She had been living with Parkinson’s for many years.  She was 91.

Jane was the only child of James O. and Lulu (Freydberg) Brown.  She was born in the little hamlet of Keene Valley, NY on October 10, 1931, where she spent her life until her marriage to Augustus S. Knight Jr. in 1953.

When Gus was employed by Mobil Oil, they resided in Irving, Texas where they raised their adopted children, moving to Chester Township, NJ in 1971 when he retired.

Jane was very active in her church, singing with the church choir and with the Masterwork Chorus, known for their performances of Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall. She could also be found knitting or stitching her needlework, tending her flower gardens, or cooking and baking her favorite recipes.  Jane played bridge regularly with her friends and worked out with a personal trainer as her Parkinson’s developed.  On the weekends and Monday nights, Jane rooted for her special teams on television, notably Dallas and Rutgers.

Jane was predeceased by her husband Augustus S. Knight Jr in 2015, her children Jim and Virginia, and many good friends.  She leaves behind many nieces and nephews from all sides of the family, down to two great-great-grand nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, at St Luke’s Episcopal Church, 182 Main St, Gladstone, NJ.  The memorial will begin at 10:30 am with meditative music, followed by the service at 11 am.  A reception will follow in the church hall. Inurnment will take place at Norton Cemetery, Keene Valley, NY in July.

The family would like to thank the Morristown Memorial Hospital Hospice for their loving care of Jane and the Bailey Funeral Home of Peapack for their assistance during this difficult time. Those wishing to memorialize Jane may do so with a donation to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in her name.   www.baileyfuneral.com
