Obituary of George J Somody

George J. Somody passed away on Nov. 23, 2011 at the NJ Fireman's Home in Boonton. He was 90. Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Long Valley and Middle Valley before moving to Chester in 1964. He was the Head Custodian at The Black River Middle School in Chester for many years before retiring in 1989. George was a Life member of the Long Valley Fire Company and a long time member of the Chester Fire Company, #1. He was a Member of St. Lawrence Church in Chester and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #5410 in Chester. He served as the Dog Warden, an Auxiliary Police officer, and the town Santa all in Chester. He was predeceased by his wife Verna, his brother Douglas, and his son Walter J. Somody. Survivors include his son George A. and his wife Sue Somody of Chester, and three granddaughters; Samantha, Brooke and Casey of Chester, one daughter Cindy Crider of Morristown; granddaughter Lynn Smith and her husband Robert and family of Washington, NJ; grandson Paul Crider and wife April and family of Chester; daughter-in-law Mary Somody, granddaughter Maria Somody, and family of Plattsburgh, NY; grandson Walter Somody Jr., Brian Somody and granddaughter Patty Somody all of Michigan. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3-7pm at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd., Mendham. Funeral Mass Monday 10 am at St. Lawrence Church Chester. Interment Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester.
