Obituary of Joseph L Gomeringer

Joseph Gomeringer, a highly-regarded CPA for more than four decades and a familiar long-time presence in several local organizations, passed away peacefully this past Sunday at his Mendham home.

The 69-year-old Gomeringer grew up in Morris Plains, graduating from Bayley Ellard High School and Seton Hall University, before taking his first job with the firm of J.H. Cohen and eventually opening his own successful practice in Chester, N.J.

He was active in community service for many years as well, proudly serving as a member of Mendham’s  Ralston Engine Co. with the township fire department. During his time there, he worked for many years as both president and treasurer. Gomeringer also served as treasurer for the Schiff Natural Lands Trusts, overseeing financial matters for the organization.

He was a member of the advisory council at St. Joseph’s Church in Mendham, and worked as chairman for the Technology Committee and as a member of the building committee for the St. Joseph School. Gomeringer was also a past Grand Knight and member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph.

His philanthropic efforts continued with his work on the Budget and Finance Committee of the ARC Morris County, a non-profit serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Joe was also an avid and opinionated sports fan, following his alma mater’s basketball team as a longtime season ticketholder seated opposite the team bench and rooting for the New York Giants as they won four Super Bowls.

He spent many summer weekends in Lavallette with his family and many friends, fishing at the Jersey shore, in Montauk, L.I., and Canada. Gomeringer was also an avid gardener.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years Mary Claire and their four children: Lindsay (fiancé Bryan Gunn); Colleen; Michael (fiancé Marangenys Alfonso); and Katie (husband Will Macatee).

Gomeringer was predeceased by his parents Leo and Mary Catherine Byrne.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road in Mendham, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Thursday funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church, West Main St., Mendham. Interment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Luke’s Special Need Ministry, St. Luke’s Parish, 265 West Mill Road in Long Valley, N.J.; the Ralston Fire House (www.ralstonengine.org) or Camp Schiff (https://www.schiffnaturepreserve.org)
