Obituary of George J. Mullen

George Joseph Mullen, Jr., 81 of Bernardsville NJ died peacefully at home on September 26, 2011 George grew up in Watertown, MA, graduated from Watertown HS, receiving the Athlete/Scholar award in his senior year. He graduated from Harvard class of 1953 and received an MBA from Harvard 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy on two aircraft carriers, the Sicily and Yorktown, and was an assistant navigator on the Yorktown in the Pacific. He was a passionate birder, conservationist and community member. A long-time advisor of NYC Audubon, he was a founding member of the Bird-Safe Glass Foundation, a board member and former President of New Jersey Audubon and Life Trustee of Manomet Center for Conservation, Plymouth, MA. He will be honored posthumously for his service to the NY Audubon Society at a dinner October 18th. He also served as senior warden at St. John on the Mountain, as well as Trustee of the Diocesan Investment Trust of the Diocese of NJ. In addition, he was a former Board member at St. Philip's Academy in Newark, NJ. Every fall he looked forward to his trips taking students from St. Philip's on bird watching expeditions to Hawk Mountain in NJ. George was a Senior Consultant in Business Development at Fiduciary Trust Company International in New York City where he has worked since 1976. Prior to Fiduciary, George was at Vance-Sanders for over a decade. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Rachel Felton Mullen of Bernardsville, NJ and three children, George F. Mullen of Somerville, NJ, Rachel Brooks Mullen of Boxford MA and Amy Mullen Luster of Brookline, MA as well as five grandchildren. He was known for his kindness and gentleness to others, adored by all and will be missed by family and friends. A service is planned for Saturday October 15 @ 10:30am at St. John on the Mountain, 379 Mount Harmony Rd, Bernardsville, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to either: St. John on the Mountain, Bernardsville, NJ; St. Philip's Academy, Newark, NJ; the NJ or NYC Audubon Society; or Manomet Center for Conservation, Plymouth, MA..
