We were so sorry to learn of George's passing, and we hope that you have many warm memories to sustain you at this painful time. We loved spending time with you all at Matheny and we are so grateful for the way you welcomed us into the Matheny residential family. Your family will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we will miss seeing George, Fragley, and you both. We are just so very sorry. With love, Andrew and Julie Gordon

After one rough week, I'm gonna break my silence, I can't handle it. My son, little brother, my friend, and my mentor; I can go on and on to you about what he means to me. I can say a lot about my George. He just passed away last week, I got a text from his mom, Ms.Evelyn, telling the news the same day of his passing. It was heart breaking. I lost myself for a little while after that. I kept reading the text again and again, it was so hard to believe he was gone. However, my boy George, will always be the most thoughtful, caring, understanding, and humble man. He had a smile that would lighten up anyone's day, it was simply contagious and that was the thing; he loved making people smile. He loved seeing them happy and that always made his smile even brighter. I would always catch his smile when he was around, I couldn't help it. Sometimes I dreaded talking to him because I'd remember how much my cheeks hurt after the last time I did.
Everybody loved him. But that was a given, he was smart and funny, his sense of humor never ceased to amuse everyone. It was no wonder everyone at Matheny school and hospital adored him. It wouldn't be the same there without George, he created the atmosphere. It was always so lively. I can't imagine how it's going to be without George and I don't want to. All the memories we shared from watching basketball and football together, us betting with drinks on who'd win the game, him telling me excitingly about his meeting with Michael Jordan, his favorite basketball player and his sponsor for his Make A Wish. I was so happy for him, he was overjoyed. And he's got such a wonderful and loving family. Mr.Bracken, Ms.Evelyn and his lovely sister Jessica. If it's hard for me I can't imagine how hard it is for his family, and for that I give them my condolences. But it kills me inside that I can't even say goodbye. I planned to see him again this summer but God got to him before I could. I am praying comforts to the family. But now my George is free of his chair and free of his bounds, flying with angels unchained. Let God-bless you for the unconditional love you showed me when you were with us. I will always love you, my son, George, rest in peace.

I worked at Matheny from 1989-1990. I was working the day George was admitted. Everyone took an immediate liking to him. After I left, I would visit and bring my young daughter, Genevieve, with me. She remembers him to this day. She is 29. George made the world a better place and we will always remember him. Elaine Strycharz

George was one of my very first residents at Matheny that I had on my caseload. During my internship, George was happy to help me write all of my papers on him and let me bother him with all of this work we had to do together, George was a good sport. I worked with George for over 4 years and every single session we had was full of laughter and his one line jokes. George always had the ability to come into a room and make everyone smile with just one word or phrase. George was always consistent and EVERY MORNING George would ask his PCA to bring him to see all the therapists on the therapy wing and I could hear him calling my name from down the hall. George is a BIG part of why I am the therapist that I am today. I’ll miss our Sunday FaceTime sessions and you telling me to move back to New Jersey. George was ALWAYS talking about his family and how much he loved them, updating me on his nieces and nephew, his parents, and family friends. George would always want to make mac and cheese, but unfortunately for him, I've always been a terrible cook! Despite my lack of knowledge in the kitchen, George enjoyed making croc pot mac and cheese that always had an interesting turnout. I'm going to cherish these memories with George forever and I always bring my memory photobook to each job to remind me where I came from. Thank you for allowing me to learn and grow. Thank you for everything George. Miss you Georgie

Death does not vanquish Love. Love becomes pure Spirit when a heart stops beating. Now, a new phase in our relationship opens its path. First we fall to our knees, blinded by tears, crawling and crushed by our loss. Friends reach out a hand, a word, a note of support. There is nothing predictable about this journey. Connecting with the disembodied Love of our most precious ones is a daily leap of Faith. How do we touch that Love when the hands are no longer present for us to grasp? How do we hear that Love when the voice has gone silent? All of the love you created with your beloved is now yours to carry, to cherish, to honor, to share — to pass-on to others, just as your precious one would. You are perpetuating his great love for Life and the many people he touched along the way. Rest in Eternal Peace, young George Bracken, 42 years of life is not long enough for us, we will keep your Spirit alive with our breath. Warmest sympathies to each and every person who loves George.
