Obituary of Canio Romano
Canio Romano passed away peacefully at home at the age of 87 on April 3rd 2020. He was born on January 4, 1933. He was married to his childhood sweetheart Barbara (Mazur) Romano for 62 years and had 3 children and 3 grandchildren.
He attended James Caldwell High School in Caldwell NJ where he lettered in Baseball. Growing up, he spent many years working on his grandparent’s farm, Matarazzo Farms in North Caldwell with his many cousins. He was an Army veteran who served in Germany during the Korean War. He was a Teamster for Union Local 863 for many years before retiring in the mid 1990’s.
He loved the small hours of spending time with family and friends whether it was Sunday visits, weekly lunches or attending his children’s and grandchildren’s games and events. Family and friends nicknamed him Sonny because he liked to be outside and Barney after race car driver Barney Oldfield because of his adventures behind the wheel. He was an avid golfer who could save par from tough situations with his chipping and putting.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Mazur Romano of Parsippany NJ, his daughter Jodi Romano and her husband Bernard of Cedar Grove, NJ, his son Carmine Romano and his wife Elizabeth of Boca Raton Florida, his son Rick Romano and his wife Sharon of Denville NJ and 3 grandchildren Alyssa, Tommy and Amanda Romano.
He is also survived by 2 brothers, John Romano and Gus Romano and 2 sisters Carmella Reagan and Mary DeMaio as well as many cousins. Donations in his name can be made to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital www.stjude.org .
The family held a private funeral service and interment took place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. A memorial service will be celebrated at a later date.
