How would we adequately describe Sandy to someone who did not know him? We could start with listing his various titles over the course of his life:
Husband, father, grandfather, doctor, veteran, professor, trustee, friend and many more.
They tell a great deal about Sandy and his life, but they still do not tell us what the essence of this man was. What drove Sandy to be the person he was?
I recall hearing in a sermon some time ago that we attain everlasting life by being of service to God and we are of service to God by being of service to man.
Throughout his life, Sandy was of service to man because he loved his fellow man.
Love is the common theme to everything that Sandy dedicated his life to:
He loved his family
He loved God
He loved his country
He loved his fellow man
Sandy was an exceptional man
Because he was a man of exceptional love
That was the essence of Sandy Davis.

Sandy was my brother-in-law and a member of a group of Fischer spouses we dubbed “the outlaws” at a family gathering many years ago.
I was graced by Sandy’s warmth, sincere concern, kindness and sweetness - not to mention his wonderful laugh and smiling eyes; traits that made it possible to talk with him about anything - from difficult challenges to happy news.
Sandy gave generously of himself to many; family, friends, patients and colleagues, as a healer, encourager, and man of faith. He contributed much loving kindness to the world around him and the people whose lives he touched.

I know how much Mariel (my colleague) loved and admired him. I have to say he and Mrs. Davis raised a beautiful, smart and thoughtful daughter who is going to do great things in the world.
Reading the obituary, I have come to learn how much more of a special man he was. Although brief, I'm glad I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance.
Sending my heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Sandy was my brother-in-law for forty years. We married into a very large Fischer family and had to, on occasion, jointly protect ourselves as "outlaws". He was a solid presence within the extended family structure, available to assist and support every member.
He had a sense of humor which he shared with family, friends, and patients. When I had a cold or sore throat, Sandy would tell me that it would be gone in five days, whether I visited a doctor or not. Saved me a fortune in unnecessary MD visits!
He was a true professional in his field. A man of competence, skill, and caring who treated those with disabilities with compassion and a sense of hope. Sandy went out of his way to make everyone feel important.
Sandy was a great husband and father. He greatly loved his wife and was extremely proud and supportive of his talented daughters.
I'm proud to have known such a wonderful guy for so long.
