Obituary of Donald McCarthy

Donald F. McCarthy passed away on December 17 surrounded by his family.  He was 88 years old.

Don was born and raised in the Bronx.  He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School, Fordham University, and St Johns Law School.  He served his country as a First Lieutenant in the US Army from 1951 to 1953. After his honorable discharge he served in the reserves until 1956.  He worked as an attorney for several law firms as well as JC Penney Co.  He had a strong faith and loved serving his church in many ministries most notably the Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight. He enjoyed golf and reading.  Most of all he loved his family and especially his wife Joan who he was married to for 62 years.  He often mentioned that she “was the best thing that ever happened to him.” 

He was pre-deceased by a son (Robert) and a granddaughter (Mary Kate).  Besides his wife Joan, he is survived by six children – Joe (Gindy), Mary Ellen (Carl), Bill (Deirdre), Kevin (Ann), Kathleen (Mike), and John (Jennifer).  He is also survived by his sister Kathleen and 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. 

Arrangements made by Bailey Funeral Home, Peapack, NJ.  Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm on Wednesday, December 19th .  A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Elizabeth’s Church in Far Hills, NJ at 10am on December 20th .  Following mass, internment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Basking Ridge, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s name can be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517.
