Obituary of Gertrud E. Hummel
Gertrud E. Hummel passed away on November 22, 2018 at Holly Manor Center in Mendham, NJ, where she spent the last 12 years of her life. She was 95.
She was born in 1923 in Hornberg in the Black Forest inGermany, to parents Gustav and Eleonore (nee Miertschke) Wandelmaier. In 1924 the family moved to Canada where her brother Werner was born and in 1926 they came to New Jersey. Gertrud attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where she studied diet and nutrition. Her degree brought her to the dining halls of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, where she worked as a dietitian. In 1950 she married the love of her life, Francis E. Hummel, from Waterbury, CT, who she met at Dartmouth. Shortly thereafter they began their family and lived most of their life in Connecticut.
Gertrud was an avid doll and Hummel figurine collector, as well as an avid follower of diet and nutrition. She was always up to date on diet fads, supplements, and everything in between. She will be remembered as a loving mother, aunt, and friend.
Gertrud is predeceased by her husband, Francis E. Hummel, and her brother Werner Wandelmaier. She is survived by her three sons, Peter, Francis P., and Paul Hummel, sister-in-law Jean Wandelmaier, nephews Roy and Bruce Wandelmaier, and niece Lynn (nee Wandelmaier) Connell.
A burial of ashes will be held at a later date at the Cavalry Cemetery in Waterbury, CT.
