I didn't know Ron very well as my initial contact with him was through the Board of Health several months back. From our first encounter, it was a pleasure seeing him each month because he was always so friendly to the group, had a broad knowledge of the subjects at hand and also welcomed me to the group whole heartily. I have attended one meeting since his passing and he is truly missed.
My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I have been a neighbor of Ron for 45 years. Ron and his family have been good neighbors all those years. In 1995, when I was Mayor, I asked Ron to join our Board of Health. He served for the past 23 years with distinction. He will be missed in the Bedminster community.
My condolences to Helen and Christine.

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Ron's family. His legacy is very impressive. I have known and worked with Ron since 1978 when I first began a career in electromagnetic safety. I recall participating with Ron on field studies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania in the 70s and 80s where I learned so much about RF and how antennas worked in the real world. He provided so much practical information that helped me fulfill my obligations in advising the FCC regarding this important area of research. I also recall the crucial role he played in the 90s in helping the FCC and FDA jump start development of standards for evaluating portable RF devices, in particular mobile phones. In later years I saw Ron on a regular basis at our IEEE/ICES meetings where he was the "glue" that held us together, and he could always be counted on to help us focus on the important issues. He was also the expert on IEEE policy and how that affected our organization. He will be missed by many people, and it will be very hard to replace his expertise. RIP, Ron.

Ron was a icon in his field of human exposure to radio signals including those from cell/mobile phones. We both worked at Bell Labs reporting to the same director and in the same division. We also were active in IEEE standards. This goes back decades with the memory of his evenhanded, calm way of running a committee or explaining exposure facts to those not wanting to hear them especially at town government meetings when he was the expert witness to give facts on the suitability and safety of cell towers and have those against being quite vocal.
But the real Ron was a gentleman who had a remarkable knowledge of the subject to the extent of quoting wireless use history as is if it just happened. I still recall Ron with Helen and Chris taking a break from a standards meeting in Italy and inviting me and my wife along to "smell the roses".
He is already missed by me and his hundreds of colleagues around the world
Rest in peace my friend.
Don

One of my fondest memories of Ron was when he was presented the ANSI Finegan Standards Medal. It was my honor and privilege to have been a part of the nomination process, and to be present at the awards ceremony. Ron took the lead on many, many committees, including chair of our ASC Z136 from 2002 until 2010, and was well deserving of the medal for “extraordinary leadership in the actual development and application of voluntary standards.”
Although I only had that one opportunity to meet Helen and Chris, I want to express how grateful I feel to have known and worked with Ron. My deepest sympathies are with you, now and in the days ahead.
With sincere condolences from all the Laser Institute of America staff — Barbara

My friend Ron Petersen will be in my memory forever. I knew Ron for 50 years through our participation in the IEEE standards development process. Ron was a joy to know; he was always helpful and was a workhorse when it came to helping keep IEEE committee work going smoothly. He accomplished this so effectively, yet quietly, always making sure that the 'i's' were dotted and the 't's' crossed. I loved his personality. In deep and contentious discussions, he was always the stable head that took it all in and, with meticulous detail, documented what transpired. For those of us who worked with Ron, he will be the next to impossible person to replace because of his extensive corporate memory of the ANSI/IEEE standards activities and his work ethic.
I send my deepest sympathy to his wife Helen and daughter Chris. I am so glad that Ron was my friend.

I'm so sorry to hear about Ron's passing. I worked with Ron on the Z136 Laser Safety Editorial Working Group and got to know him really well - what a hard working, knowledgeable and wonderful person. I could talk to Ron about anything and he guided and provided me with so much knowledge. Along with family and friends, he will be very much missed, but thinking about Ron brings to mind how kind he was and the mentorship he provided. You will always be with me and everyone else that knew you so well Ron.

I first met Ron in 1986 when I visited Bell Labs as a relatively junior engineer from Australia. Ron was a gracious host and, over the years, helped me so much in the areas of EMR standards, safety and measurements. Ron was a gentleman and great mentor and he will be very sadly missed. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Ron's passing is a great loss to the EMR community. We worked closely on many issues over the years, and the education he provided many gave all those on the side of rational standards and truthful research and peer reviewed publications the ability to defend our work despite those who would use the color of their degrees and other so-called credentials to scare the public as a way of earning a living. I miss his presence deeply.

We were fortunate to have worked with/for Ron (he never acted as a boss but treated you as an equal) at the beginning of our Bell Labs careers...which continued after our retirements, up until his passing.
Many of the thoughts expressed in these tributes are about his work career, professionalism and incredible breadth of knowledge in the scientific arena. We also had the pleasure of experiencing the more social aspects of Ron’s life, from the stories of his US Marine Corps service (Semper Fi !!), his passion of sailing, skeet shooting and the love of his dogs......during the many meals we all shared with our fellow Bell Labs buddies – little discussion on work and more of the “life” stories. He was someone who could speak as fluently with a PhD as with a car mechanic (not that he needed one). Navigate the oceans on the L’Agilite’ (his sailboat), proficient skeet shooter, rebuild a carburetor and design a TWT amplifier – WOW!
We will always cherish those times and his friendship, we are blessed to have shared them together!
Helen & Chris, many your own precious memories of Ron, help comfort you both, during this very difficult time. We hold you in our thoughts and prayers.
Ron, we raise a glass to you, buddy!

My condolences to Ron's family and shared sadness with those who, like me, have worked with Ron, some of us for decades, on various IEEE committees. Ron's intellectual precision, knowledge, kindness, caring, humility, extraordinary competence, and gentle being were just a few attributes that made it enriching and pleasurable to be with him at meetings or work together via e-mail. I learned much from Ron and feel bereft. His memory will be with me all my days.

Ron hired me out of college in 1978. I have known Ron for nearly 40 years as I kept in touch with him and other Bell Labs co-workers. Even after his retirement in 2001,We enjoyed lunch at Arthur's with Doug M, Fred O, Paul T, and Horatio M at least twice a year and most recently in April 2018. Ron was the most knowledgable person I have ever met in any subject matter. He will be missed by everyone that has ever met him.
My thoughts, prayers, and condolences are extended to his family for their tremendous loss. The world now has one less great person!

Dear Ron, after taking on the IEEE/TC95/SC3 co-chairing in the early 2000’s, from a faraway place I had an opportunity to work with and to know you more. It’s inspiring and when things go slow you made it easier. When I grow up I would like to be like you !

I got to know Ron in 1973-74 when I was still a graduate student at the University of Washington. We have been friends since that time. Ron was our Bell Labs contract monitor in the early 80's. Later, we served together on IEEE ICES, NCRP, IEC, and COMAR. It was just enjoyable to work with Ron. He has been a role model for me. Now, I have to learn how to adjust without Ron in our committees. Ron definitely won the respect and hearts from all of us. We will always remember him and miss him.
