I can’t bring myself to call her Dorothy, she was always Mrs. Topping to me. Growing up in Central Florida, Brian and I grew to be the best of friends and still are. I spent countless hours of my youth at the Topping home. Brian and I would take turns taking slap shots at the fence to see who could break the wooden planks first until Mr. Topping would come home and witness our destruction, hoping and praying that the new ice rink would open up soon so that we could take our frustrations out on the hockey rink. Mrs. Topping was always there with a lemonade, a snack and certainly more than my share of home cooked meals. I was always greeted with a warm smile and a hug and for many years the Topping home was my second home, with Mrs. Topping running the place like a fine tuned machine. At the direction of Dorothy (there I said it), the Toppngs introduced me to their church, not to convert me from my Jewish faith, but to teach me about Catholicism while insisting I do the same with Brian at our synagogue, now Brian can school me on my own religion, thanks in a huge part to Dorothy’s insistence that an exceptional education is an expectation not just a privilege. I will always have fond and loving memories of Dorothy, I can truly say that her kindness and love helped shape who I am. There is comfort knowing that she now rests peacefully in the arms of her lord and savior and while we will miss her dearly on this earth, she is looking down smiling upon us, with that million dollar smile and a huge sense of pride in her family, knowing that the world is better because she dwelt upon it.
