Obituary of Lyman Foster Nicholas
Lyman F. Nicholas of Mendham, New Jersey died peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 16, 2011 surrounded by his family.
Born in Flanders, New Jersey in 1927 Lyman was a graduate of Blair Academy (1944) and Lafayette College (1947). He went on to become owner and manager of the New York Pennant Company (1948-1955). Lyman started in sales (1955) with the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company (Verizon) where he worked until his retirement (1988). Throughout his career he held numerous positions within the organization and was deeply involved in oversight of the AT&T divestiture.
Lyman retired from the New Jersey National Guard as Captain of the 113th Medical Battalion, 50th Armored Division. He was an active member in his community throughout his life which included serving as a Volunteer Fireman for the Flanders Fire Company, Flanders, NJ; President of the Board of Trustees of the United Presbyterian Church of Flanders; Member of the Board of Education of West Morris Regional High School; Trustee of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester, NJ; Superintendent Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Chester, NJ; Member and President of the Board of Education of Morris Township, Morristown, NJ; Member of the Washington Association of New Jersey, Morristown, NJ; Member of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, Morristown, NJ and "Sceep" Tutor for the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, Morristown, NJ.
Lyman is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth, his life long partner of 60 years, his son David, his wife Renee, daughter Elizabeth, her husband Kevin Walsh, daughter Barbara, her husband Robert Sandelands and six adoring grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Presbyterian Church on the Green in Morristown, NJ Saturday February 26th at 2pm. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, February 25th from 2-4 at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ.
