Obituary of George F. Murphy

George F. Murphy died peacefully with his family at his side on January 30, 2011 at the age of 83. Born at home in Teaneck, he lived in River Edge and then resided for 45 years in Brookside, N.J., before moving to Flanders in 2003. Mr. Murphy served in the Navy during WWII from 1945-1946. He graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1950 and continued his education at Polytechnical Institute of Brooklyn in Microwave Engineering. He worked at Kay Elemetrics and KDI Triangle Electronics, where he worked on the microwave communications system for the space shuttle. He was a longtime supporter of Community Hope and coached youth sports in Mendham Township for many years. He volunteered at the Mendham Township Library and as a local pole worker in local and national elections. His family will remember him as a loving and caring father and grandfather, an inspiration to his children, and an active outdoorsman. He enjoyed bird watching, walking, and competed in 5K races late into his 60s. He was an avid reader and history buff. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Patricia (Pat), his son Michael, and brother John. He is survived by three sons; Brian and his wife Nancy of Succasunna, David and his wife Kamila of Prague, Czech Republic, and John and his wife Judi of Oak Ridge, three daughters Jeanne Murphy of Boonton, Maura Mowbray of Blairstown, and Megan Murphy and her husband Eric Teed of New Russia, N.Y. He is also survived by one brother Daniel Murphy of Oakland, N.J., and two sisters; Sr. Helen Murphy of Pearl River, N.Y. and Marie Veiling and her husband Franz of Indianapolis, I.N. and his grandchildren: Kelly Murphy, Erin Murphy, Kevin Murphy, Shaun Mowbray, Jacquilyn Mowbray, Ryan Murphy, Samantha Hooper, Jakub Michalek, and Liam Murphy. He also has one granddaughter on the way. Visitation will held on Wednesday from 3-5 & 7-9pm at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd., Mendham.
