Obituary of Dorothy Hardin Dillon

Dorothy Hardin Dillon of Gladstone, NJ, died peacefully on September 16th, 2010 after a brief illness. She is survived by Sidney G. Dillon, her husband of 62 years; five children: Dorothy D. Raymond of Potomac, MD; Thomas H. Dillon of Oldwick, NJ; Lucy S. Dillon of Nantucket; Mary D. Bird of Bethesda, MD; Charles H. Dillon of Oldwick; nine grandchildren and a brother William D. Hardin. Mrs. Dillon graduated from Vassar College as President of her class of 1944-1945 ("the Class with the Dash"). She received a Masters Degree in Education from Rutgers University. She put her education to work at Kent Place School in Summit, NJ where she taught constitutional law, acted as the college advisor and served as Head of School. In more recent years she was the Development Director of the Somerset Hills YMCA and a founding trustee of The Willow School near Gladstone. Dorothy Dillon was active at St. Luke's Church in Gladstone, where she was married in 1948. She was head of the Sunday School, a member of the Vestry, became Senior Warden, and chaired the successful Capital Campaign. Mrs. Dillon was also active in local politics, serving on the Peapack Gladstone Borough Council. For almost 50 years, Dorothy and her family summered on Nantucket. She was a member of the Sconset Chapel, the Sankaty Golf Club, and the Sconset Casino. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the Maria Mitchell Association. Always an athlete, Mrs. Dillon enjoyed many sports, both in college and later in life. She was a member for many years of the Somerset Lake & Game Club and the Somerset Country Club. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's Church, Gladstone, at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 27th.
