Jack Bayor

Obituary of Jack Bayor

JACK BAYOR - AGE 87 - WWII VET, LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER The following obit was written by Denise Bayor In 1953 Jack Bayor moved to Liberty Township to raise a family and open his own variety store. It was a real mom & pop store. It was a time before there were malls. When you opened the front door a cowbell went off. There was also a nice sweet smell of penny candy when you walked in. My father's store was long on merchandise and short on elegance. Clothing and a plethora of other goods were piled on shelves. Rubber boots hung from the wooden beams on the ceiling. You paid 10 cents for a glass bottle of A-Treat soda. You could find everything from A to Z in that store. The customers that came were down to earth country folk. Blue collar workers, dairy farmers and muck farmers. A lot of people got things on credit and made a payment every month with no interest. My father also had a wholesale route in NJ where he supplied all the other general stores with merchandise. Neighbors and friends described Mr. Bayor as a hard workingman who worked seven days a week, 12 hours a day. He never complained about being sick. Born in Newark, he lived on High & Williams streets until he moved to Liberty Township in 1952 and stayed for 53 years. He was in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a medic with the "Crash Crew". My dad was a salesman for a publishing company, and then opened a variety store in Newark in 1947. Five years later he and my mother Carrie bought a house along Route 46 that caught their eye. Jack told Carrie "You can pick a house anywhere in this state and wherever we go, I'll make a living" Denise recalls hearing. So Uncle Gil, Uncle Al and my father built the cinder block building next to their house. My father was in business for 60 years. He always said he was "satisfied with his success." "Any business has got hard knocks in it." "You have to have a lot of patience, you'll succeed eventually. I didn't get rich. I'm happy knowing I made a good living." His son, Wayne Bayor, died in 1979 at age 23. His wife, Carrie Bayor died in 1999 at age 83. Surviving is a daughter Denise.
