Brookside - Ernest Edward Maw, Jr. passed away Friday June 12, 2009. He was 76 years old.
Ernie (Slug) Maw was born on West Main Street in Brookside, NJ on February 14th, 1933. He was one of 4 children of Ernest E. Maw Sr. and H. Gwendoline Threlfall. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1951 and was on the football and track teams. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1951. He was an Eagle Scout in Mendham's Troop 1 and participated in the first national Jamboree in 1937. He appeared in a number of scout training films, the first edition of the Scout Field Book, and articles in Boy's Life Magazine.
In 1954 he married Jean Perrault of Morristown, NJ and together raised 6 children in Brookside.
Ernie was a very proud resident of Brookside; living his entire life there. He ran a construction business as well as Woods Hole Farm. He was a life time member and former Chief (1965-66) of the Brookside Engine Company No. 1 and was the founder and inaugural Captain (1969-70) of the Mendham Township First Aid Squad.
Ernie was very active in the community. For years he and his family were regular participants in the annual Brookside 4th July parade; constructing elaborate floats with his family for the enjoyment of all. Some of his lifelong hobbies were fishing, camping, and canoeing.
He was an environmentalist and conservationist playing a key role in the establishment of many natural parks and recreational areas throughout Brookside and Ralston including the Schiff Scout nature preserve, Dismal Harmony Park, and Meadow Wood Park. He was part of the Mendham Township Preservation committee, and was instrumental in the establishment of many of the town's historical districts. He was appointed as the Mendham Township Historian and is a lifelong member of the Ralston Historical Association. He was a regular feature on the local cable channel with his "Armchair Tours" of various local natural and historical sites.
Ernie's survivors include his two sisters June McKinnell of Sanibel, FL and Mary Walsh of Harrisburg, PA, his children Jimmy of Brookside, NJ, Ernie of Munich, Germany, David of Brookside, NJ, Ellen of Stonington, CT, Eric of Sanibel, FL, and Brian of West Caldwell, NJ. He was also loved and will be greatly missed by his 7 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
The wake will be Tuesday June 16 at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ 07945. Wake hours are scheduled between 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Brookside Community Church, 8 East Main Street, Brookside, NJ.
