Joan K. McCarthy (née Rickert), 94, passed away on July 22, 2026.

Born and raised in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York, Joan was the daughter of Frank and Kathryn Rickert and the sister of Frank and Robert. She graduated from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School in Brooklyn, New York, in 1949 and went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Vincent's School of Nursing.

In 1956, she married Donald McCarthy, whom she loved deeply. After dedicating herself to raising their seven children, Joan returned to nursing and worked at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey, until her retirement in 1997.

Joan's faith in the Lord was the foundation of her life. She generously volunteered her time in numerous ministries at St. Elizabeth – St Brigid Parish in Peapack, New Jersey, most notably with the Daughters of Mary. She also devoted many years to volunteering at the Far Hills Rummage Sale.

Family was Joan's greatest joy.  She loved opening her home to family and friends, especially during holidays and birthdays. Christmas Eve was a cherished tradition, with all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gathering together. Her grandchildren always looked forward to visiting Nana, listening to her stories, and learning from the wisdom she shared. 

Even in her final days, Joan continued to guide those she loved. While she was still able to speak, she reminded her family to always point their children to the Lord and keep their eyes fixed on Him.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Donald, her son, Robert and her grand - daughter Mary Kate. She is survived by her children: Joe (Gindy), Mary Ellen (Carl), Bill (Deirdre), Kevin (Ann), Kathleen (Mike), and John (Jennifer); her sister-in-law, Kathleen; 12 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 26th from 1-5pm, at the Bailey Funeral Home, 176 Main Street, Peapack.  A Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, July 27th at 11:00am at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 129 Main St., Peapack.  Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 145 Mt. Airy Rd., Basking Ridge.
