James E. Banko Obituary
James Edward Banko, of Chester, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, at the age of 92.
Born on April 21, 1934, in Irvington, New Jersey, Jim was the son of Frank and Rose Banko. He was raised in Livingston, New Jersey, where he developed the strong work ethic, humility, and practical skills that would define his life. He proudly served two years in the United States Army before beginning a long and respected career as a master plumber.
Jim was happiest when he was doing something with his hands. Whether he was fixing something that was broken, tending his garden, heading out to fish or hunt, taking a back-road adventure on his property, or boating at his beloved lake house, he found joy in staying busy and making the most of every day. He believed life was meant to be lived, and he was always ready for the next project, outing, or adventure.
More than anything, Jim will be remembered for the way he lived. He never wasted energy worrying about things that didn't matter because it was always a beautiful day. He encouraged everyone around him to "keep smiling," a phrase he lived by every day. He never said goodbye, and no visit to his home felt complete without him standing on the front porch, watching as family and loved ones drove away.
Jim's love was shown through actions rather than words. His love language was making waffles, bacon, and Nesquik chocolate milk for the people he cared about, especially his grandchildren. He rarely talked about himself unless someone asked, preferring instead to listen, help, and put the needs of others before his own. He had a quiet generosity, steady presence, and unwavering devotion to his family that will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of over 70 years, Frances; his sons, James II, Frank, and Christopher; his grandchildren, James III, Jonathan, Justin, Kelly, and Patrick; and his great-grandchildren, Finn and Rowe.
His family finds comfort in the countless memories he leaves behind and in the lessons he taught by the way he lived: work hard, take care of the people you love, don't sweat the small stuff, and always keep smiling.
Though he will be profoundly missed, his spirit will live on in every repair project, every fishing trip, every shared breakfast, and every family gathering. His quiet strength, selflessness, and enduring love will remain with all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A funeral mass will be held at St Joseph Church Chapel, 8 West Main Street, Mendham, on Monday, July 27th at 10:30 am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to Community Hope.
