Obituary of Lewis S Babbitt, Sr.
Lewis Shipman Babbitt, Sr. passed away surrounded by his family on August 23, 2025. He was 82 years old.
A lifelong Morristown resident, Lewis was born in 1943 to parents Claude and Frances Babbitt (nee Shipman). He graduated from Morristown High School ('61) and obtained his Associates Degree at County College of Morris. He worked at Singer Sewing Machine Company, and then for Breeze Eastern as an engineer before retiring in 2020.
Lewis was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was loved by all who had the opportunity to meet and spend time with him. In his earlier years, he was a coach and mentor for Morristown National Little League, Baseball, and Softball teams, and was an active member of Morristown High School's Football Father's Club.
In his free time, you could find him shooting his guns at the range, watching his grandchildren thrive in their activities, and indulging in his love for cooking and food. He could be found driving his beloved Corvette around town. He was an active participant of Natural Glass Corvette Association and spent many afternoons attending car shows.
With deep family roots in Morristown, he was affiliated with Morristown Presbyterian Church. He had a passion for genealogy and was an active member of the Babbitt Family Association and is a direct descendant of James Chilton of The Mayflower.
Lewis is survived by his sons, Lewis Babbitt, Jr. and wife Ida, Donald Babbitt and wife Vicki, Jason Babbitt and wife Shanda, daughter Sandra Gelato and husband Greg, and grandchildren Nicholas, Sydney, Hannah, Briana, Julia, Dean, Andrew, and Serafina. Also survived by his brother George E. Babbitt and wife Leslie.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Ann Babbitt (nee Taylor), and brother Claude P. Babbitt, Jr.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 27th, from 4-8pm at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ 07945. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 28th at 10am in the funeral home, www.baileyfuneral.com, followed by interment at Peapack Union Cemetery.
