Hey Sweendog, I miss you already!!!
Kind of thought you would always be around...tossing out those humorous and pithy comments when we needed them most. I had the privilege and honor of being your teammate in high school and college....thank you for the guiding hand....much love to you and your family, Steve Penders

I am fortunate to have gotten to know John through his years of dedicated service to Peapack Gladstone as a member of the Town Council. He was smart, inquisitive and had a delightful sense of humor. As the Head of Gill st. Bernard’s, whenever the school had an issue or application into the town, I knew we would be treated fairly. His passing is a tremendous loss to his family and the community. Truly, John was an outstanding public servant in a time when we need it more than ever. Godspeed and deepest condolences to his family. Sid Rowell

John was a Towering figure in our SHP class of 1980 - a scholar and an athlete and a man with a smile. Because I moved away from Jersey a long time ago, I haven't seen John much over the last 45 years, but the bonds of SHP brotherhood are strong. I enjoyed seeing the occasional update on his activities on LinkedIn and appreciated it when he took the trouble to "like" one of my LinkedIn posts. May God bless him, and may he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to John's family. Hazard Zet Forward! - Dennis Newman, Highlands Ranch, CO (SHP '80)

Loved John's warmth and humor! A favorite Y '84 classmate. Wonderful memory of driving in his station wagon around NYC and dancing at Heartbreak into the wee hours with my now husband and roommate Kyle. Sending love and prayers to the family. RIP Beth Hallahan Dempsey

We lost a good man in John.
A wonderful husband, father, brother, son, and the list goes on.
John was my first and best friend when I moved to West Caldwell 50+ years ago. We went to grade school together, played basketball and football together along with many other shenanigans while we went to different high schools, we played each other in football and coincidentally enough lined up against one another, me as right guard and him as left tackle. Fair to say he got the best of me on most plays:)
John then went on to Ivy League college (I didn’t ). Our paths crossed once again when we attended Seton Hall Law School together. John graduated at the top of our class (I didn’t).
John, or Sweens as he was called was always there when you needed him. It was an honor to know John and to be called a friend. God bless John and his family.

Sending condolences to all who loved this good, good man. Though most of his Yale friends knew as Sweens, I always called him "Mickey." He was my very first friend in college, and showed up wearing a Mickey Mouse t-shirt. His lack of pretense, his humility, and good nature reassured me that I was going to find people I could connect with at Yale. May his memory be for a blessing.

Farewell my old 1830 roomie! We had some good times! When I joined LinkedIn several years ago, you were the first person to see it and send me a message. You were so happy to know I was doing well after so many years, and you let Nick and Bobbus know I was good. Just a week ago you commented on a facebook post of mine, and asked me about a purple sports coat that you remembered seeing me in a few years earlier, and next thing I know, Bob and Nick are telling me you're gone. Still shocked!
Rest in Paradise, Sween Dawg! Til we meet again...

I knew John during his service to Peapack-Gladstone. He was always dedicated to the Borough whether it was on council or the Land Use Board or the Planning Board before it. He gave meaningful advice on big matters and small. He helped guide the Borough not one but two rounds of the Borough's Affordable Housing obligation. And he did it quietly with great suggestions to help the Borough through the process. But that was John. For all the years I knew him, I never he graduated from Yale and played football for them. Not a boastful bone in his body. John always came through with common sense answers coupled with good humor. The highest praise I can give to John is he was an honorable and GOOD MAN. I'd like to think he was a friend, and I will miss him.

We only knew John from Church and Knights of Columbus. Always a friendly and smile face at church and community events. I had a nice conversation with him in January when he saw my son wearing his Seton Hall Prep Shirt, he was so happy about him going there and gave us some tips, I could see how much he love SHP! Sorry to hear bout his passing. Prayers for his wife and family!

A Sweeney by birth, John and I never knew if we were blood cousins but we shared the same often odd sense of Irish humor. One of us or the other would always call and say Cuz it’s your Cuz. Well needless to say he is missed.

I’ve know John since we played football in middle school on the Chargers football team.
We both attended and were part of the Seton Hall Prep football where John played and I suffered on the practice squad.
During the past two years he helped set up my mother’s trust and helped manage her will upon her passing. Our family was grateful to John for how he cared for my mother’s finances.
I pray for his wife and kids.
Can’t believe he is gone.
Peace

John was an amazing brother-in-law with a great sense of humor. He never said the word No to anyone who needed his help and he always gave freely. John loved music so I can only imagine he’s attending a great rock concert up in Heaven right now. Godspeed John! You are sorely missed.

John was my attorney at a time in my life when I needed more than attorney, I needed a friend, confidant and mentor. He filled all of those roles spectacularly. I am comforted by the fact that when I get to the pearly gates there will be someone there to advocate for me as I am sure I will need it. Rest in peace my friend.

John was an usher in my church. He was a councilman for my town. He was the treasurer of the Kinights of Columbus. He had just won the primary to be elected as the Surrogate of Somerset County. He coached his kids and many others in pop warner football. He believed wholeheartedly in community service. He is a model for all citizens. He will be missed.
