Dear Susan and family,
Very sad to hear this news. There were three of us who worked under Jim for ten years at the medical center. We were all very close and spent a lot of time together. His love was teaching. He truly cared about his students and he was an excellent educator. We talked not only about surgery but about life. I learned a lot from him. He was intelligent, honest, dedicated and funny. I think of him often. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Juan Alonso

Dear Maguire family,
Dr. Maguire was my residency program director. I have so many fond memories of him. Dr. Maguire always took the time to teach me techniques and encourage me to work hard and continue learning. He gave of himself generously and was extraordinarily dedicated to teaching. Jim was very empathetic and humane. He always spoke lovingly of his wife and children. He was a family man and a great mentor.
Dr. Maguire also used to love to talk about opera, religion and other deep topics. He taught me a lot about life and put a positive perspective on some of the most difficult situations I have personally encountered. I was in touch with him throughout the years and always reached out around Thanksgiving as I was and always will be so thankful for him.
I will miss Dr. Maguire deeply. My sincerest condolences.
-Dr. Nancy Herbst

Susan
So saddened to hear about Jim.
As a kid maybe 8 years old I would visit our Grandma's home 723 Mt. Prospect Ave Newark. Nan lived with Uncle Tud on the first floor . Jimmy and his parents on the second floor. Jimmy and I would play the whole weekend. What did we do? Watch Captain Video, play stick ball in the Acme parking lot, go to Branch Book park fly balsa wood airplanes - they would always wind up in the trees, make model boats, play chess. Jimmy taught me a chess move that results in check mate in four moves. I have taught my grandson William that same strategy and he beats me using it. Jimmy had a great comic book collection. How often did we get together? Maybe every three weeks or so. I would take the #27 bus from our home at one end of Newark to his house at the other end of Newark. I would have a brown paper bag with my pj's and clothes change. The fare was a dime. One time the bus driver asked as we were close to the end of his route and I was the only person on the bus -"Kid are you running away from home?"
So many memories -special times.
May you Rest In Peace Dear Cousin
Paul
