Obituary of Dr. Thomas Elliott Wing

The family of Dr. Thomas Elliott Wing of Mendham, NJ, is saddened to announce his passing on February 19, 2025, at the age of 86 years.

Born in Flushing, NY, to Maurice and Frances (Elliott) Wing, Thomas grew up the third of four children in Port Washington, NY. He played tackle on the Port Washington High School football team and was a member of the school’s undefeated chess team.

He graduated from Princeton University with a B.S. in Engineering, and Columbia University with a PhD in Physics. He moved to Mendham with his family in 1971 and has been a resident since. He was a man of faith and a parishioner of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown and was a Vestry member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mendham. He also served on the Mendham Borough Board of Education.

Thomas served his country as an officer on an aircraft carrier in the Navy from 1960 to 1963, spending most of his time in the Mediterranean Sea. He was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs and Lucent Technologies for many years, and through his work, authored several patents. He served as a visiting professor at Howard University and an adjunct professor at Drew University. He was a lifelong sailor, and enjoyed playing chess and bridge, and spending time with his family at his summer home on Cape Cod.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Margaret “Peggy” Wing; his son Dr. Richard Wing and his wife Laura Wing of Rochester, NY; his daughter Lisa Wing Stone and her husband Matthew Stone of Washington DC; his brother Dr. Edward Wing and his wife Dr. Rena Wing; and his sister-in-law Barbara Wing. He was the proud grandfather to Maxwell and Owen Stone and Isaac, Caleb, and Sarah Wing. He is predeceased by his brother John Wing, sister Susan Klumpp, and brother-in-law Allan Klumpp.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1, at 11 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 70 Maple Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960, immediately followed by interment at Mendham Hilltop Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Thomas’s memory may be made to the Mendham First Aid Squad or the Mendham Borough Public Library.
