I met Bernice (Van to me) when she and the family moved to Chatham Township in 1966. We were next door neighbors and became good friends. Our daughters played together and we shared many happy times and many cups of coffee.
I WILL MISS HER! She was a good and loyal friend.
My sympathy to Susan, Nancy, Samantha and George

I met Bernice late last year and was one of her caregivers. For the short time I must say she was always so pleasant and cheerful, always smiling. She will be missed. RIP Bernice. Terry Allen Wellington.

Van your kind heart will be missed. Van was always so friendly and welcoming to us. We enjoyed listening to all of Van’s stories about her adventures with George and especially with her granddaughter Samantha who she loved so dearly. The joy that she had each day in the simple pleasures of life like playing on her iPad and enjoying the sunshine in her solarium illustrate her happy inner soul. We know you will always be with us and we are glad that you are at peace.

It’s sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Petrone. People say “we all gotta’ go sometime”, but that never really softens the pain of losing a loved one and my heart goes out to her family and friends. On the other hand, her passing reminds me of all the crazy, fun years I spent, not only working for the Petrone’s, but living in New Jersey. We were literally, young, wild and free. But that freedom was reined in by parents, like Mrs. Petrone, who kept a watchful eye on all of us. One look from her and you knew you’d crossed the line. She was kind and hard working. My poor mother often heard how Nancy’s socks were ironed and folded and ours were not. How their basement had saddles, bridles and photos of horses and ours had a furnace. “Well, when you get older..” my mom would say, with a cynical smile.
Mrs. Petrone was nearly always home when I showed up for work and it took four years before I got a compliment from her. Showing up seven days a week is normal for horse ownership but not always easy when you’re a tired kid. Mrs. Petrone did not take this responsibility lightly therefore, I had to man-up as well. She later kept us in line when we became boy crazy. Her stern values actually made the their barn feel like a safe haven from high school weirdness.
Mrs. Petrone, like all the parents in New Vernon, raised us, raised me. I still ride and muck and built my own stable with elements from their barns and influences. It might not seem like much, but these relationships meant a great deal to me, the new kid, in New Jersey.
Hillary Clinton once said it takes a village to raise a child and I agree. Mrs. Petrone was part of that village. Thank you Mrs. Petrone for always being a steady force and for taking a chance on me even after I spilled shavings on your couch, flooded the downstairs bathroom with bubbles, called on the kitchen inter-calm daily, looking for Nancy, and after we managed to eat half the food in your pantry. Guess I owe you one. Thanks for the great memories. Rest easy, you raised more than two terrific daughters. Jean❤️
