Charles (Chip) Mills passed away suddenly on Friday, October 1, 2021. He was 65.
Born in Morristown, NJ, to the late George (Ray) and Ann (Bogert) Mills, Chip was raised in Mendham Township. He attended Mendham High School and graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Chip started his career as a Professional Engineer for the Bridgewater Township Engineering Department, and it became his second home. He rose to the position of Engineering Division Manager and devoted his professional life to the betterment of his town. Chip’s colleagues offered words of praise for his dedication, kindness, non-judgmental manner, and willingness to take on any project, no matter the scope and scale. He will be remembered for his 40+ years of enduring service.
For decades, Chip also volunteered with the Bridgewater area Boy Scout Troops #154, 46, 88, and others, assisting troop members pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout. Chip supervised numerous service projects that involved engineering planning and field work. These projects improved local parks and recreation facilities for generations to come.
Chip was an avid historian who devoured books on a wide range of topics, including WWII, Vietnam, and his beloved state of NJ. He even collected antique picture postcards of favorite places he visited in NJ. Chip entertained family with his stories, intellect, and humor. When it came to sports, he enjoyed watching football with friends and relatives alike.
Chip is survived by his loving family, including his sister Constance Mills Shirtz, nephew Jeffrey Shirtz, and niece Jamie Shirtz. Chip was particularly proud of his nephew and niece who followed in his footsteps with careers in engineering.
A private burial is planned, with a memorial service in the spring of 2022. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Chip’s name to the NJ Boy Scouts Patriot’s Path Council using the link below. (Please select “Make a Tribute Gift” in memory of Chip Mills.)
