Obituary of John C. Swatsworth

John C. Swatsworth John C. "Jack" Swatsworth, passed away Monday March 9, 2009 at Morristown Memorial Hospital with his family at his side. He was 80. Jack was born and raised in Newark, NJ. He was a graduate of Central High School and a Veteran of the United States Navy. In 1959 he and his wife Sophie, and sons John, Jr. and Robert moved to Mendham, NJ, where he resided until his death. In 1954, He, along with his two Uncles Herman and Eugene Barkow, founded Barworth, Inc., in Springfield, NJ. The company gained some recognition for the development of it's product Micro Valve, which had significant impact on the modernization of oil and gas service equipment in the oil fields of West Texas and Oklahoma. His sons eventually found their way to Barworth and continue to operate the business today. His formal education was a high school degree, but he had an excellent mind for mechanics and seemed always to find the simple solution to a problem when others were looking for something more complicated. Jack was an eternal optimist, and rarely had a harsh word to say about anyone. He was a source of common sense and sound advice. Some of his favorite things other than being at home in Mendham with his wife Sophie of 61 years were Monmouth Park Racetrack, Northern Pike fishing in Canada, the jersey Shore, Old Newark, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Jack was an enrichment to all our lives. We are thankful for his long life. He was dearly loved. He was predeceased by his grandson Jackson Swatsworth of Chester in 2002. Survivors include his wife Sophie of Mendham, 2 sons; John Jr. and his wife Sheila of Chester, NJ, and Robert and his wife Sarah of High Bridge, NJ. He is also survived by his 2 grandchildren Patrick Swatsworth of Wilmington DE and Emily Swats worth of Chester, NJ. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-8pm at the Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Rd. Mendham. Funeral Service Friday at 1pm at the Hilltop Presbyterian Church. Interment Mendham Hilltop Cemetery.
